I did have him in the car (PIP below), and never in a million years thought that would EVER happen to me, lol.
How long after you made it to the hospital, did you have yours?
Long story, sorry: So basically I woke up on 4/2 (6 days before EDD) with irregular contractions, we timed them for a few hours and they were at 8 minutes for awhile. With DS1 I was 5 days late when I went to the hospital and even though I was having contractions every 5 minutes, they still almost sent me home (but instead I spent an hour and a half walking the hospital).
Since my contractions were not super intense at 8 minutes apart, we waited as I thought this could have been false labor. Finally they got to 5 minutes apart so we called the hospital and they said to come in, our sitter came 30 minutes later and off we went to the hosital, it is 20 minutes away (due to some detours). So right before we get in the car, I felt this major need to use the bathroom, nothing happened so off we went to the car (looking back, this bathroom trip was definitely push #1, I just did not know it then). So glad he was not born in the toilet.
I swear to you, the second I sat down in the car I was like, "DH, we NEED to get to the hospital NOW, I WANT THAT EPIDURAL!! ". The pain was getting worse and worse, but still I felt that I had plenty of time. DH drives maybe 1/2 mile away from the house and my fucking water breaks, in the car. As soon as my water broke, I knew that this baby wanted out, like now. So I told my husband that I was pushing, and he told me not to, not realizing that I had absolutely no control over it at all. My body was bearing down on it's own and I knew it was a matter of minutes. I told DH to call 911 and somehow neither of us freaked out, I think it was just something that was going to happen no matter what, so we just kinda dealt with it. So as I' m pushing, DH calls 911, and they tell him to pull over and that the emergency vehichles would find me. He pulled over 5 minutes later, (side of a pretty busy road) and runs over to my side of the car. I was sitting in the passenger side in the front and could not move. DH checks me (how awkward?) and sees no "activity", lol. The funny part is that he wanted to recline me but the baby seat was already installed behind me. DH said that after trying to calmly remove it for a few moments, he freaked out and after finally getting it out of the base, flung it across the car. He had already decided that he was going to take off his sweatshirt in order to catch the baby and wrap him up. It's amazing how adrenaline can really make people so calm and collected in these types of moments. So maybe 3 minutes after we had pulled over the firetruck, ambulance and police show up (this was only maybe 8 minutes after we had left the house). The Paramedic checked me and saw nothing, so he asked me to get onto the stretcher, but I could not move at all. All I kept saying was, "I swear we did not wait too long at the house, my contractions just became 5 minutes apart...". That is so me, always trying to explain myself, haha. So the EMT walked away for a moment so get his bag of items and like a minute later I was like, "Um..his head is out?!?", sure enough it was, and my pants were still on. So they pull my pants down and basically just catch LO. DH is watching all of this through the windshield.
After he was born, the rest of a little hazy for me, the shock that I was in was un-real. I was kind of in and out of it, if that makes sense. I kept my eyes closed for about 45 minutes, only opening every now and then. I think perhaps this was my way of coping, because the placenta was not delivered until almost 45 minutes after LO was born (they waited until I was at the hospital), I was in such pain from those contractions. They kept offering for me to hold LO, but I could not. It was just so painful.
So yes, my car was covered in A. fluid and after birth, . We had to go through insurance to get it cleaned and it took like a week for all of that paperwork, so my car was pretty funky. They replaced all of the carpet, and the passenger seat since the fluid went all the way down to the foam. We made it into the local paper. This is considered a home birth.
The whole thing still blows my mind. I love how my DH looks soooo happy, and I'm in such pain, lol.
What a cool story. This almost happened to a friend of mine last month. He ended up going 90 down the road to the hospital and in the time it took him to drop her off and park, the baby was born--when he walked into the room he thought he was in the wrong room because a baby was crying.
I was supposed to be induced and went into labor at 3 am the morning before. I figured there was no need to go to the hospital early, so I just labored at home until it was time to get to the hospital. My contractions started getting REALLY intense in the car on the way there, I could barely make it out of the car. They had to get me in a wheelchair, took me to the room and I was checked by a nurse and it broke my water and out slid Jack! The hospital was probably 30 minutes from the house. I swear, if we had waited any longer, he would have been born in the car. it was probably from the time we got to the hospital, 20 minutes max. And 10 of that was convincing me to get out of the car!
You are amazing! I've always wondered what happens if you have the baby in the car. Do you still have that car?

Chels- lol, thanks. Laurack- haha Dragonmommy- Thanks katfco- Too funny, I can't imagine walking into the room and the baby is already out, crazy. Irishsara- Thanks. Your story is cool too. LOL at it took you 10 minutes to get out of the car, I can totally relate. You are sooo lucky that you just made it there in time. Yep, we had just bought the car 5 months before he was born, so after it was professionally deep cleaned, she is as good as new. My co-worker bought me one of those "Baby on Board" signs and added the word, "born", lol. kistjenn- It certainly is a crazy story. We've typed it out for him, and it's in his baby book. ruby-lol, thanks.
That is so amazing! It will always make me think twice about going to the the hospital for the next child's birth. I will be thinking, I don't want to be like Music lover and have LO in the car! You are infamous!

What an amazing birth story! Also, I love your picture, you DH's big smile is awesome! I am also now terrified of having my next child in my car. We live 45 minutes from a hospital! AHH!
