Good gawd, it could be anything... lots of trees/shrubs loom similar and I can't see the leaves closely; but I'm going with crape myrtle too. Only because they're so freaking over abundant and that's what would seem typical in this landscape, based on the other plants in it that I can positively ID.

It's a pic from Houzz, but it's by a local (Southeast WI) landscaper. So I'm thinking Texas Mountain Laurel is out. We're Zone 4/5, so I'd be surprised if it's a crepe myrtle, too.

If you like it based on appearance, you can have it. Any small, muti-stemmed tree (including large shrubs) that is hardy in your zone will work. You'll achieve the look, with minimal pruning to maintain.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to do some research. Good thing I picked up a new gardening book this weekend!
I want to create a screened seating area by the playset, so I'm looking for some nice foundation pieces that are medium-to-tall shrubs or small trees like that one.
