Yay! And I'm so glad you posted over here to let us know because I've been anxious for an update (maybe I need to get a real life, lol)
psssh... are you serious? I live for this juicy reading. So much more exciting than my life (thankfully, actually).
He sounds like a MAJOR sketch ball who apparently has some shady things on "his file" that border patrol flagged as suspicious and told Studytime to more or less please PLEASE be careful and that was enough for her to go home.
and THEN he has the tenacity to EMAIL her back after she said the meeting wasn't happening during her 5 hour drive home ( a family member met her at the border) and more or less said she was crazy, that she fabricated the story, and that if she didn't she was a psychopath for making up such an intricate story and that she needs "to disappear forever" .
I've been following the story and so glad she didn't go through with meeting him. I know people meet online and sometimes internet relationships turn out with a happy ending, but there were so many red flags here.

yikes.
birkbop reporting live from S&B! It all sounds so crazy, but I'm glad she went home. She can do better.

I agree, it's not weird for her to be questioned at all. My ex-bf and I wanted to go to the Canada side of Niagara Falls for one night and they questioned us for 20 minutes and went to town rifling through our luggage. She seems SO naive.

uhhh yes. do people not understand that we are (arguably) the most powerful country in the world and that it wasn't 10 years ago 9/11 happened? i'd much rather be questioned for 20 minutes then not.... it's like at the airport -- i'd much rather wait in line and be fully screened than not. peace of mind people...
Can I just say that after reading that update, it sure seems like a lot of people don't have experience traveling outside of the country... My sister gets stopped EVERY.FRIGGIN.TIME. b/c there's some other chick out there w/ her same first, middle, & last name AND birthdate who is illegal in the country. The last time I traveled with her, I had to wait 45 minutes while she got questioned about stupid shit. My H has no middle name so if we ever travel to a Spanish-speaking country, he ALWAYS gets stopped too b/c it takes him forever to prove that he's not Jose Tejas - Colombian drug lord, Jose Tejas - Dominican refugee, Jose Tejas - Panamanian convict, but just Jose Tejas - American w/ no middle name. Whenever my family members visit from Brazil, they make sure they have all of our info, our names, address, phone numbers b/c they always ask why are you here, who are you visiting, where do they live, where do they go to school? I don't get why people on ML think it's so odd that she got questioned hardcore.
I think the story is weird, but not because she got questioned. What is weird is that they would have so much info about the person she was going to visit. Sure, they could look him up, but I wouldn't think they have access to anything that she couldn't have found herself by searching public records online. If they had some info like a recent criminal conviction, then she probably didn't do a very good job checking him out.
Only one-third of Americans hold a passport. That is so sad to me.And yeah, immigration in any country is going to question you thoroughly about the purpose of your entry.
I really hope she lets some girls do some searches and background checking on this guy. Mostly because this is really entertaining and I don't want the story to end here

very
IDK, I don't think it's surprising or sad. International travel is expensive and something that most people can't afford. My own international travel has been fairly pathetic, but I hope to change that.
My passport actually just expired, so right now I'm in the 66% of Americans who have no passport (I'm assuming that statistic is for current passports). I need to renew it soon since we plan to go to Mexico this summer.

You are definitely right that it is cost prohibitive for many people. I guess when I say that it's sad, I think it is because a lot of Americans seem like they have no desire to go anywhere else. But that's just a huge sweeping generalization.
