My sister and I were talking about old toys that we used to play with, and I was curious what you all remembered as toys you loved as a child? My two older kids (4 and 5) seem like they have a ton of toys, but most of them they don't really play with. I'm looking to replace a lot of their toys with toys I know that they will love and play with for a long time.
I remember loving the old vintage Fisher Price Little People like these:
I have that barn for DS. I doesn't have any of the people or animals, so I made him some farm animals to go in it. I wish I could say it was mine, but I found it at a garage sale.
My favorite toy growing up was my Lincoln log set. I spent hours building houses with those. My mom still has them and I can't wait for DS to be old enough to play with them!
My cabbage patch kid and my little pony collection. LEGOS were pretty awesome. My dad also made me a big wooden crane with moving parts that got a lot of attention.

I loved the old little people! The new ones are so large and plastic-y. I guess they've reached out to a younger demographic, but this post is making me nostalgic for the cities I built as a kid with wooden blocks for the "real" little people.
Lincoln logs, matchbox cars, barbies, my little pony, cardboard blocks. My mom saved some of these and even got two more sets of the blocks. I can't wait to play with DD. ETA: I nearly forgot about my collection of Breyer horses! I loved those and my mom even taught me how to crochet so I could make them blankets.
This little town, too. Ugh! I want to play with this stuff right now!
Yes!! This!! Is there a new version of this? I've looked everywhere for a comparable 'village' (that's what we called it) but nothing is quite as good as I remember that particular toy being.
A close second would be the other Fischer Price playsets we had, i.e. the plane, the school, the farm... But man, my kids even love the village now: we even still have all the little letters for the mail slots!
My mom still hauls it out for our kids to play with when we are on vacation at her house...but won't let is take it home because she wants to be the grandma with the cool toys, lol.
ETA: I would've been crazy about that airport...all of our FP toys were apparently garage sale finds of my moms, so we just had the airplane: I didn't even know there was a whole airport.
They sold a remake of the cash register a year or two ago at Toys'R'Us, but I figured DS wouldn't like it. They have one in his classroom and he loves playing with it.
I loved Lego. It's great being an adult and being able to get the ones I want to play with as gifts for DS (he picks too).
I loved Legos, Lincoln Logs, Barbies (I used to build massive houses for them by opening up my dad's record cases and forming rooms), and My Little Ponies.

I was big into Legos, Barbies, books, stuffed animals specifically Glow Worm, lite bright, Littlest Pet Shop and trolls. I did also have the Fisher Price Barn and Airport posted above.
Best part my parents saved most of the stuff above.

I had a million My Little Ponies that I loved. I also was a big fan of Tinker Toys. My parents still have the Little People farm, Main Street, and house. I think there's a Little People castle at my grandparents house. I think the old style is way more fun than the new ones.

I think the new ones are large and plastic-y because the older figures were too small to pass today's choking hazard standards - my mom has my Sesame Street playset with a few of the figurines and bought DD some of the newer figurines to fill out the set, and the size difference is comical.
I definitely agree, but in the process they have become a a much younger kid's toy, KWIM? I remember playing with them through preschool before, and DS definitely lost interest in the newer little people by age 3. Or maybe I played with they until I was too old for such toys .
I honestly didn't have many toys as a kid, so other than the swing set in our backyard, nothing jumps out. Well - my roller blades. I was on those constantly. Even in the winter I would go in circles in the garage.
One item that I did love, was this Klutz book that I purchased. I knew this thing cover to cover, and loved how it was interactive. I spent hours at a time soaking up what I read. There's another similar Klutz book that I loved equally, but can't find it. Both are out of print now.

MIL saved this Sesame Street playset from when DH was a kid, and now DS loves it. She also kept the little figures, and we let the kids have a few of them only with supervision until DS put the Cookie Monster figure completely in his mouth and was about to swallow it (at 2 years old) when I had my back turned one day. I freaked out, and Cookie Monster and all the other old Little People have joined our other chokable toys hidden in the basement.
I would never give a kid one of those retro Little People again. My kids are 2.5 and they still love the new Little People, especially the ones that look like characters they know, like Superheros and the Disney Princesses.

Yeah, for some reason I assumed the retro little people were meant to be a preschooler toy back in the day (ie- age 3+) and not an infant/toddler toy like the new ones are. Perhaps that wasn't the case as choking standards have come a long way.
Speaking of retro toys and choking, the worst foreign body aspiration I've ever seen was a light bulb from an old school light brite. The bulb seriously eroded into the toddle r's lungs and caused massive inflammation. DS has a newer light bright he got for his bday and I only let him take it out when DD is napping, and I double check the number of bulbs after.
