For some reason I've recently started getting painful side cramps on at least 50% of my runs. I haven't changed a single thing about my routine, so I have no idea why this is happening. I still run at the same time, same route, same hydration/fuel, same breathing - literally nothing has changed. I eat a banana and take a multi-vitamin every day. Any idea why this is happening or what I can do to stop it?
I've read a lot of theories on the internet about how to stop side cramps after they happen, but the only thing that's worked for me so far is running uphill while leaning way forward, kind of bent into the cramp. I don't know why that works, but it does. Any other suggestions? Changing my breathing pattern and drinking water haven't helped so far.
I get those too. I find it helps to take a deep breath and push ALL the air out a few times in a row. It supposedly helps to rid any CO2 and lactic acid buildup. Also, try running with your hands stretched out behind you for a minute or so. My cramps tend to be from bad posture, so this helps.
Let me see if i can explain this right... Which ever side your stitch is on, lets say its the right...when your left foot hits the ground, exhale. That always helps me. As does slowing down a little.
