What do they check for? My old fella has lost a little weight too, but since we just moved this past summer and our lifestyle changed a lot I am not sure if that is the cause or if it's something age related. He seems in good health over all and hasn't lost a lot, but I have noticed.

I'm thinking that the old Budster is losing a little because now he has to go up and down 2 flights of stairs every time we take them out to potty, whereas we had a yard with 3 steps before.
It's hard when they get older and you can see that they've aged.

Not sure if you have a dog or cat, but hyperactive thyroid is common in older cats (maybe dogs too?). My cat was diagnosed with it at about 10 when he had suddenly lost weight. Just like with people it's very manageable with medicine. Hope everything goes ok for you.
ETA: does he eat like a maniac? My cat was, which was why it was so weird that he lost weight.
