We have FINALLY decided to do HW in the living and masterbed and carpet in the 2 upstairs bedrooms. The carpet sales lady keeps telling me that patterned carpet is the way to go. I'm not so sure. I've never bought carpet before so I don't really know what's a "good buy". This is the carpet she recommends shawfloors.com/carpetDetails/Pattern/Residential/Kiwi_Gold_0C135-Ivory_Glaze So should I go with a patterned or regular carpet?
I have a light colored patterned carpet in my family room. It was something the previous owners chose.
My biggest complaint about it is that the patterns seem to show traffic patterns and wear more than, e.g., an even pile berber. It's like foot traffic dirt catches on the higher pile parts of the pattern, whereas with a berber it's all level and there's no tufts to catch dirt on. I don't know if that makes sense? So the pattern becomes more pronounced-looking in some areas of the floor than others, depending on wear and staining.
I am not sure how much that would matter in a bedroom, but it's not cute in my family room. I wouldn't choose it again.

I hadn't really considered berber b/c the ones I've seen seem rough. Are there some that are softer? The sales lady also was steering me away from berber b/c she said it traps dirt. No idea if that is true.
Check online on the specs of your vacuum, some can tear up certain kinds of carpet. IIRC, you want to be able to turn your beater brush off with berber

I did like the frieze carpet she showed us. The problem.... it cost about $700 more than regular pile. Since it will just be in the bedroom, I might have to go with the less expensive option.

For just doing two bedrooms, and not worrying to much about wear since bedrooms don't get that much wear, I would try to find some remnants. Is the place you are going a local store? We went to a local store called, I am not kidding you, "Jim Bob's Carpet Warehouse". I never would have gone if my realtor hadn't recommended it! Anyway we could get a way better price on something in stock than going for fairly inexpensive stuff through HD.
