I ran a 10K last weekend. At the finish line, the person ahead of me got a finishers medal and then they ran out. I was told to leave my name and bib number at the band shell and I would be mailed a medal.
I did that and wonder if I should email. This is the second Hartford Marathon event I have done that they have run out of stuff. I am a bit upset because I registered in February and they set a limit of 600 people and, even though they sold out, only 545 ran. I was 513. Slow, I know.
I'd email for sure. This happened to me at my first 25K race and I was so annoyed. I had been running for over 3 hours (yep, slow) and kids had just been coming up and taking the medals for themselves. I let them know in person how pissed I was, then emailed when I got home. After a week went by with no medal, I emailed again. Ended up getting two in the mail; I made a keychain out of one.
I would email. They should know that you are a little peeved that two years in a row they ran out of medals. They should also be better prepared, especially for a small race. I would email them a polite email saying you think they need to be better organized so that ALL runners, down to the very last one, gets a finishing medal.
I wouldn't worry too much about the medal. However, I would email them about running out of things. If they know their numbers they shouldn't run out. It seems like poor planning on someone's part. I have so many finisher's medals I really don't care if I get one or not. I like my bib numbers better!

Last weekend, as in 2 days ago? If that's the case, i'd give them more than 2 days to mail medals out.. Yes, it's poor planning, but it happens. Something might have happened at the manufacturer that could have resulted in the incorrect number of medals.
I've been mailed a medal before, it took about 3 weeks.

I agree with this. If you haven't received it in a couple of weeks, send a follow up email. It's annoying that they ran out, but give them a chance to fix their mistake before you chew them out!
I actually was wondering if I should email because of the way the information was taken by the volunteer. I mainly want to make sure they know it was a problem.
I know it is silly to want the finishers medal because I was so slow but it was my first 10k and I was really proud of myself. :\

It's not the least bit silly to want your medal! You earned the thing. I've *not* signed up for races in the past because they don't offer medals. LOVE the bling.

It's not silly at all. If you're afraid that your information wasn't taken down and passed along correctly, I would send a quick email along the lines of, "I participated in x race this past weekend and I understand that they ran out of medals. I just wanted to make sure that (race organization) had my correct info to mail the finishers medal when more become available. Thanks."

I would do this. Just a non-confrontational email letting them know that you still expect a medal.

This! I love my bling so I agree that a nice email reminding them is perfectly ok.
