My soon to be closet has wood EVERYWHERE! Yup all 4 walls and ceilings are knotted pine with a hardwood floor. There are no windows. It's very dark in there. I was thinking about either white washing or painting to brighten up the room. Which would you do? I have never white washed anything before where as I have painted plenty and already have the supplies.
ETA: The room is 18X7. That's a lot of wood to sand!! I am leaning more towards painting. DH thinks I will hate the painted look.

I'm hating you for a 18x7 closet! Ha!
I have seen a bunch of modern houses using wood, but usually not floor, ceiling & walls.
A friend if mine is slowly painting her knotty pine interior (her whole house!). It is a total pain in the ass because you can't just roll it in and the knotty parts suck up a ton of paint even after priming. Can you do just the ceiling? I'm assuming the walls will be covered in hanging clothes and you can do a rug in the floor.

Whoa - that's a giant closet.
I liked on the TOH Cambridge project when they showed whitewashing or whitestaining pine for their downstairs ceilings and I thought it looked really nice - however, I don't think I'd like that look throughout a closet.
Painting or redrywalling is probably your better bet.

Oh I am super excited to get all the space! I had been using a 2X3 closet in our bedroom and using the 2X7 guest room on separate floors for the last 4 yrs! So glad that's over!
DH thinks the walls don't need priming and we should just go straight to paint! Can we do that?
If you want to waste your money, then go right to paint. Primer is cheaper and seals the wood. If you want to cover the knots, use a shellac based primer.

Yeah we were arguing about that. I said we need to prime! So what about using a paint that has primer in it?

I am not convinced that it would cover the knots/grain well, or wouldn't still soak into the wood.
I think it's bare in some places. From what i can see in the dark some parts look very shiny so I am guessing there is a poly coat on it. We are going to use an electric sander to get that off.
