I usually cut my own hair. I'm cheap and it's curly, so it is pretty hard to mess up.
I saw this photo the other day. I like how it looks like she has the ends subtly dyed reddish and I like the feathered bangs.
We are throwing all our extra $ at getting the house ready to list, so if I want to get a cut/color I'll have to wait at least a month. Plus, I'm hesitant to get a color professionally done because my hair doesn't take dye well and the last 2 times I had it pro done, you couldn't even tell. $$ wasted.
So do you even like this style? Would the bangs just look like a mom haircut on me?
Do you think I should attempt either cut or color on my own? I don't have any meetings coming up and don't have to go into an office (I wfh).
Last question, I normally pull my hair away from my face. If you are able to let your hair frame your face, any tricks to making it not drive you crazy?
Wait the month for a pro. It will be worth it. Trust me. While your hair is curly and you won't be able to tell if the layers are off a bit, you can go from easy-peasy to looking like a puffball gone wrong with a bad snip. And unless you have professional scissors that are really sharp, you're going to end up with frizzy ends. Bad. If you can't tell your hair is colored, your colorist is probably doing it wrong or using the wrong product/color. Keep the scissors in the drawer! Be patient!
I wouldn't recomment doing anything yourself. My hairstylist says they are in business because of those grocery store bought coloring systems. I am sure there are plenty people do it themselves and are fine. However, it's easier to do at home (IMO) if you are starting with lighter hair to begin with. I have natural dark hair and I can't/don't know how to lift/remove the dark pigments in order for the new colors to take. Also, I cut my hair myself before and was busted the next time I went to a hair dresser. LOL! He knew it was done by me. I have gone to the mall at Regis/Mastercut before to keep the cost down. They cut my hair fine for around $16/$18. But I do agree with PPs to let the hair grow out a little more.

I agree to let a pro do it. If it was just the cut, that't one thing. But getting bangs right isn't easy. I would never attempt trying to dye just the tips of my hair...by myself. It would be really difficult to make it look even.
I have am ombre effect in my hair also, but my hair is much longer & it's half brown/blonde. She had a complicated technique that included teasing the hair at the base so that the dye at the tips wouldn't look like a straight line across, but feathered. I wouldn't try that at home.
Man! I was really hoping for some Go for it! replies.
I'll wait. I have have luck before cutting my own hair. No stylist has ever been able to tell, or even asked.
Humph. I'll bring out my patience. I'm sure it's around here somewhere...
Go for it!
I have short curly hair that I cut and color (purple-ish black) myself. I buy the color/supplies at a professional supply place. I used to pay to get it cut and colored, but it was really expensive, never as purple-ish as I like, and I can cut my hair more the way that I like it.
I tried really hard to let the stylist have enough time to understand what I wanted, but she wasn't getting it and it was not worth my time or money. I give hair stylists more than a couple of tries before I give up on them, but honestly, I get more compliments when I cut my own hair and even when I don't do a great job it isn't worse than the pros do. And my short hair grows fast, so even if I do flub, it will grow out soon enough and I am not out anything. ;p
One reason that I keep my hair short is that when it gets past a certain point I keep it pulled back because it is annoying (and too hot). I figured that if it was going to look short, it might as well be short.

TBM - ha! Thanks! Maybe I'll try the cut this afternoon and see how it works out. I pull the front back everyday now, so even if its not great, I can just pull it back and it will look the same.

Okay, TBM, you're hip if your hair looks purple in some lights. I like it!
I had pink hair for awhile. And I've got a head full of dye right now, trying to fix a pro-mistake (she's fixed once before and I'm done with her, I think. hard to fire a stylist).

You did a good job. It looks cute.
But trust me, stylists can always tell when you cut/dye it yourself. They're just unlikely to say so because it's hard for that to come out without sounding insulting. This is straight from my stylist.

I never try to hide the fact that I cut and dye my hair from a stylist. Just like I don't pretend not to have any gray and that my hair color is natural.

Thanks ladies! I liked the cut so much I did some color this morning too while waiting for files to download for work. I just did pieces. DH came home for lunch and said it looked really great! I love working from home. I essentially just got paid to dye my hair. Ha!
