I stopped buying gallons of milk because we wouldn't use them up fast enough, so I changed over to half gallons.
I bought a half gallon of milk last Wednesday. It has never been opened and the sell by date is 3/11/2013 (today). I keep our fridge at 34 degrees and keep the milk towards the back of the fridge. There isn't a whole lot in the fridge either, so the air can circulate just fine.
It went bad.
WHY does my milk always go bad?! I thought milk was supposed to last at least 1 week. Especially since I never opened the stupid thing. It isn't in a clear plastic container, it's in the white plastic. That's supposed to help too.
Try getting the cardboard containers. The light can still get through the white plastic container although it is harder than the clear plastic. I have a 1/2 gallon in a cardboard container that I purchased 2 weeks ago that doesn't expire until April 6.
I pick it up last at the grocery store. And we only live 10 miles away.
Lol, no I like milk. I know sometimes when you sniff and it smells sort of sour, that often times you pour it into a cup and taste it and it's fine. But this is outright sour.

I think I will have to try different containers and/or brands/kinds. I'm just sick of tossing milk so soon. I told my husband I should start freezing it ASAP once home but my freezer doesn't have much room left.

I find lower milk fats stay fresher longer. Check your fridge with a thermometer. Also, are you always buying your milk at the same place? Maybe their fridge isn't keeping the milk cold and it's starting the spoiling process? A place near my work had this issue and installed heavy clear plastic strips to keep the cold air in. It helped them tremendously and I didn't end up buying spoiled milk for our coffee station anymore.
I used to buy our milk from Weis, the Weis brand. Then we started shopping at Giant and I'd try the Giant brand, but it was all clear container. So I switched to Swiss which is what I grew up on and has a white container.
But now that I think about it, I did once mention to my Husband that their cases smelled a bit sour. But I didn't smell it the last few times. Maybe their fridges are helping it along, like you said.
I'm also aware this is SO first world problem here, I should just be thankful I have milk. lol.
