We have a bar area in our family room visible and accessible from everywhere. We use it as a bar only about 4 times a year, and the rest of the time it is a dumping ground for coats, shoes and bags as we come in from the garage. I would like to repurpose the space entirely, but DH thinks it should stay (go figure).
It is tiled with alternating square tiles in rust, forest green and cream on the top and the wall under the top and is framed by oak wood. The tiles are rough texture (drawing a blank on the term), not glazed smooth like bathroom tiles. It's an eyesore (in addition to the junk it accumulates).
It's not a priority to rework right now (plus the conflicting opinions on what it should be), but I would like to Make it look better with as little cost as possible. Im open to any suggestions, i just want to make it better without making it worse. I have seen various solutions online, and am hoping something like the glaze paint might work, as I don't want to undertake major sanding specifically and ideally less smelly products would be better.

I did, a kitchen backsplash. I used SW adhesion primer and high-gloss enamel (oil based). Just cleaned it well with deglosser first, then went to town. It wasn't too difficult or time/money consuming.
