Last year we had a contractor install a granite vanity top in our half bath. He ran a bead of caulk where the backsplash meets the vanity top, at the side of the vanity top against the wall, and above the backsplash. It started yellowing after only a few months. I think it makes the whole thing look gross and I want to rip it out and replace it.
Does this depend on the brand of caulk? I was thinking about getting the most expensive 100% silicone clear caulk that I could find and trying it again with that. I could do white above the backsplash and against the wall, since the wainscot is white but I don't think it would look right where the vanity top and the backsplash meet since this is the granite:
That's a good question. Our granite guy using an expensive clear 100% silicone where our granite meets a cabinet and it hasn't yellowed at all. It's also in a windowless bathroom though so that might make a difference.
Our clear caulk in our bathroom is going on 2 I think, and we don't have any yellowing. We do have a window, but no direct sunlight on the caulk. Unfortunately I don't know the brand.
We have one window but it faces north so it is not in blaring sunlight. I could deal with something on the order of a 5 year caulk lifespan but not months!
We used unsanded siliconized acrylic caulk with the granite counters in our bathrooms. It comes in a variety of colors. It may not hold up as long as the silicone caulk would, but it is easy enough to apply/reapply and looks good.
At the risk of sounding simple, have you asked someone at a Home Depot or Lowe's about this? Generally I find advice from those folks to be helpful, and if you get one of the more experienced folk, they can probably point you toward the best caulk to use to avoid yellowing.
