The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern 11/22/63 by Stephen King Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed The Kingkiller Chronicles series by Patrick Rothfuss if you like fantasy/Game of Thrones type stuff Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson Bossypants by Tina Fey The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
Edit to add Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn... not a book I normally recommend because some people love it and others hate it, but it would occupy you on a flight for sure.
Thanks - I am trying to get stuff from the library for my kindle so most of the popular books have a LONG waiting list.
For example, I am now in line as user 462 to borrow gone girl. Yup, that means over 450 people have to read it first.
Yuck. I get all my books from the library so I feel you on that. Sometimes I have a weird jump though--I was 120 something for Gone Girl when it unexpectedly came in for me at the library.
I like the Free Library of Philadelphia, for $35 a year they have a large selection of Kindle books and short wait times. womet suggested it to me.
Good but not-so-popular/recent books I have read in the last year or so:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand The Rook by Daniel O'Malley Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

Thank you carmen - I got on the waiting list for a few, currently none of them are available right now. The thing that is frustrating is that all the ebooks are literally for the ENTIRE state. So there might be three or four copies (or more) copies of something popular like Gone Girl, but it still takes a while to cycle through. I am the first person on the waiting list for Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which sounds really good. I enjoyed reading Memoirs of a Geisha and also Shanghai Girls recently.
I like non-fiction and historical biographies. I'm currently "My Dearest Friend: Letters of John and Abigail Adams."
The next one in my queue is "Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens."
Last year I really enjoyed "The Last Princess" (about Queen Victoria's youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice), and "The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin." A couple years ago I read "10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America" and enjoyed it.
Are you looking for light and fluffy? I always enjoy the Emily Giffin books when traveling because they are mindless yet entertaining. Laura Lippman writes good thriller/mystery type books - I prefer her stand alones rather than the Tess Monaghan series she writes.
In terms of books that might be available in time for your trip, try Molokai by Alan Brennert Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Some of the older Jen Lancaster books (figuring those would be available) The Story of Beautiful Girl (might still be too new, but worth a shot) The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron is very engaging.
I just put this one down because I couldn't get into it. Normally I'd have given it more of a shot, but I have 4 other library books out right now which is too many to justify sticking with a book I don't look forward to picking up.
I really wanted to like it--I'll go back to it at some point hopefully.
