Well, step one is I need to start (re-learn?) to swim. I had lessons as a kid and in middle school, but basically haven't stuck a toe into a pool in years.
Then I need to buy a new bike because I had to sell mine when we moved, because we ran out of space. lol
Good to hear! I am definitely going to keep trying because the convenience is so nice. Especially since I am about to take up swimming (in hopes of doing a tri) and I will need to do that after work.
Say whaaaaa?!?! This is great! This is such a great triathlon city! I'm no expert, but if you need any advice or have any questions, please feel free to ask. coconutbug has a wealth of knowledge and is local, too. I think she agrees with me that Chasing 3 is the best production company around, so definitely see if one of their races fits in to your schedule!
Yes, do a tri!! And feel free to ask if you need any info, though kams is the expert on all things local. Chasing 3 races are great.
I think I will be doing my first one in San Diego (with a friend, we have a deal) but hopefully I like it and want to do more!
But, um, where do they have tris around here? There is no water. lol
Which one in SD? I used to live in LA and did a bunch of the ones in the SD/Pendleton area.
Yeah, the sad part about tris in ABQ is that the sprints are usually in pools and they are usually reverse sprints. But there's Cochiti about 45min north and Elephant Butte somewhere south. I'm sure there are more that kams would know about.
Not sure, we haven't signed up for one yet. But she has to learn to run and I have to learn to swim. Once we both do those things, we are going to do our first tri together.
I actually expect I will be doing most (if I do more) back in WI/IL where I have a couple of good friends who are really into tris. And there is also water.
June through September everything is at Cochiti Lake (outside of Santa Fe), Storrie Lake (Las Vegas), Santa Rosa, & Elephant Butte. There's one outside of Roswell called Milkman but apparently it's disgusting water. In the other months, everything is reverse with pool swims.
Cochiti is up by tent rocks, right? I know where that is.
Yep! The cochiti lake sprint & Olympic is on July 28 (Coconutbug and I both have raced that one), and then the 505 (long coiurse) and Little 505 (sprint) are there on Aug 31. The 505 is new this year and I'm REALLY excited about it!
I've never done it before - this will be my first year at Elephant Butte. All I know is it's a big lake, & moderately challenging course. They have a sprint, Oly, & 70.3. It's a pretty popular one, so it must be okay!
Cochiti is an easy run course & a moderate bike course (imo) once you get out of transition. You have to climb "the wall" out of transition for bike & run. It's really steep, but it's over quickly. Rough roads for part of the bike course and a long climb, but also a few really fast, freshly paved downhill miles.
I hope you like it too. I loooove the training (maybe more than actually racing!). Those finish lines are a thing of beauty though!

And if it makes you feel any better, I just jogged with my bike up "the wall" because I'm both slow AND a wimp. At the time, I considered that slightly less embarrassing than falling off my bike due to being too slow (though in retrospect, I really could/should have just put my bike in the lowest gear and tried to huff and puff my way up it).
I did it! I got up a little after 6, let the dogs out and got on the treadmill for 3 miles. Was supposed to do 4 today but I ran out of time as I still had to shower and get ready for work. I'm feeling great right now but I'm so not a morning person I don't know if I can do this on the regular.
