One of my neighbors just parked a motorhome in his backyard. I'm really afraid it will be permanent.
Our backyards in this neighborhood are only about as big as a motorhome. So it takes up his WHOLE back yard. He's kind of a trashy guy... that's why I think it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I'm soooo discouraged by this new development. I'm probably too judgemental and selfish for thinking about diminishing property values.
We had that in our last house and is a good part of the reason why we moved. He was the Zeppole guy in the traveling carneval so it was a true eyesore. Luckily, he was away from about Feb-Oct so it was only there during the winter months. We bought our home in October so when he came home a few weeks later, I just about died! Then when we listed our home, we made sure it was when he wasn't there!

It could be worse, it could be in front of his house. I just called our neighborhood cop about 2 camper vans parked on our street. They are both so shitty and never move. Total eyesore for the neighborhood. One has been there 7 years. Never moved. The owner is my bitchy neighbor who drives a mercedes compressor and has a wide driveway/parking area on her property.
The other I feel sort oif bad about because it belongs to one of the neighborhoods oldest residents. But DUDE. It has sat there for 3 years without moving! He works at a junkyard so he has 3 other cars parked on the street by his house. The camper is like 1/2 block away!
The officer put 7 day notices on them and if they are not gone they get towed. So I guess front might be better. At least then you can do something about it!
I'd feel the same way. I'm the QUEEN of judging when it comes to yards and things that might diminish property values. One of the many reasons I love a good HOA. On the flip side, I got some great neighborhood news today- my house backs up to a development that went bankrupt before the houses were actually built (so there are roads, trees, etc) so the development has sat with no activity for 5+ years. Anyway, there is a luxury homebuilder taking it on and I'm SO stoked to have houses in the neighborhood area that cost 2-3x mine! I was kind of leery about how much upgrading I wanted to do, but now I think we've got a green light. Yay!
When we moved into our neighborhood here I found out that the county lets the bus drivers take their buses HOME. I was like WTF are all these buses doing in people's drivways? Why aren't they parked in some sort of central lot (which is what I had growing up)? DH told me it was allowed. Then again our county isn't exactly up to par on keeping things nice.

As far as I know right now, it's perfectly legal. It's in his (6' wood privacy) fenced backyard. But it is highly visible. These are attached rowhouses, to give you some idea of how close together we live, and how tiny our backyards are. When he had some guy come around and start dismantling the back section of his old rickety fence, I was so happy because the fence itself was such an eyesore. Obviously he was just making room for the trailer. I'd rather him raise chickens or grow pot on his property. But that IS illegal.
You are not judgemental or selfish. I would hate that too and that's exactly why I'm happy to live in a neighborhood with a HOA. My parents live in a neighborhood with no HOA. When we bought our house they couldn't believe that we would live somewhere and agree to pay $100 /year and have to follow certain rules (we can't have fences, etc). Well, their neighbor has just parked his boat AND camper on the side of his garage which is now the view from parent's living room window. Um, I'll happily pay my $100/yr not to have that view.

My dad is sort of the guy you are complaining about. Only, he had a nice enclosed trailer that we used to move in the driveway for a few days after we moved in (because it takes a lot of crap to move 6 people) so we got a welcome letter.
He isn't as bad now, but his driveway is full of vehicles. Stickin' it to the man, one busted Cavalier at a time.

To be fair, he only has one Cavalier now. The garage houses his (almost fully) restored Corvette and an e-body Cuda that my mom bought before she passed that is in pieces. He has at least 3 motorcycles, 2 pick up trucks (though I think there is a 3rd), 1 Cavalier and 1 Sunfire. Then, my sisters both live their and each have a car. He has a boat, but he stores it somewhere else.
I cannot imagine what his insurance bill is every month.
If it makes you feel better, that guy's motorhome is probably worth more than 2 of my neighbors' house combined.
I'll trade you a decent motorhome for a grove full of old farm machinery, scraps from 1/2 torn down buildings and other junk that is the view out my LR window. Good thing there's 20 acres of field between us at least.

My H brings home cars like lost puppies (luckily we have a big garage). If the car isn't on the road then he doesn't add it to the insurance until he's done with it. The cars we're driving are older, so the insurance is really cheap. Plus adding a vehicle doesn't seem to be nearly as expensive as if that was the only car.

Oh I know, I work in insurance.
I'm 95% sure he's way undercovered and only has insurance on the ones that run, but that is all but the e-body and maybe 1 truck. And he has to maintain a clean driving record (trucker). I'm sure he has liability only on all of them, but the cheapest I've seen liability only on any vehicle so far (for his age) is $20/month.
