I never tell people "hey, you should run". But when I tell them about my running, they give me excuses as to why they don't. Or how "they'd love to, but..." Um, not buts. Just no buts! JUST STFU!
I am also not built for running. I envy those people I see running who make it look so painless. My running nickname (between my family members) is Rockbiter. Because I run like I'm a box of rocks.
But if your knee is hurting when you run, I don't think you should just run through it because you're going to destroy your knee. You need to research and find out what you're doing that's making it hurt and look for ways to solve the problem. I just think running through non-muscle pain can be dangerous. Now if it's just burning muscles, then yeah, run through it.
You as in me? Or "you" as in people who think they can't run because their knees hurt?

Both! If the pain is non-muscular, there is something wrong. I'm not saying there aren't measures that can be taken to fix it, but I don't think anyone should be advised to "run through it".
My UO is that I genuinely think "If I can be a runner, anyone can be a runner".
And my confesh is I side eye people who give me excuses (other than legit medical excuses)as reasons they "cannot" run. "My knees really hurt when I run" isn't a good excuse for a mostly sedentary person. Of course they hurt. You don't use them. IF you use them, they will probably stop hurting. I kind of take those excuses personally. I feel like I have overcome so much, and hearing those excuses, in my brain, makes me think my accomplishment doesn't seem like much to them.
I prefer the "no one is chasing me, i'm not going to run" reason for not running!
Oh man. Now I am majorly sad I used to be a runner, and I used to be a damn good runner. I ran a marathon in 3 hours and 56 minutes. I ran a half marathon in an hour and 42 minutes....that is like a 7something minute mile pace.
My knees are fucked up beyond all belief. I really can't run because of them. Well, no, Dixee, you are correct. My orthopedic surgeon said I can run, but then I will most likely need a knee replacement in my early 40s. I will probably need one anyway, but not in 11-19 years.
I'm so pissed at the doctor who messed me up. The first surgeon did not know what he was doing. He even admitted his mistake in his report. He messed up the routine surgery, accidentally drilled a hole all the way through my bone, and then had to abandon that procedure and do something else. All the while I was under for nearly 6 hours for a surgery that normal takes an hour and a half. To make matters worse, he left a screw protruding from my bone. I contacted malpractice lawyers. They all said I had a case, especially because my current doctor was willing to testify and the old surgeon admitted his mistake. But, all the malpractice lawyers said it wasn't worth their time because the max I would have received was 200k. While I am grateful for my overall health, the quality of my life has changed and my knees hurt almost daily. It also hurts when I play with my son now, which breaks my heart.
CD, I know I already quoted you regarding old joints today But man, I can relate. My hips greatly affect my quality of life. I get sad when I see others my age doing marathons and high impact, strenuous exercise. I simply can't afford to do that to my body. I'll forever be a swimmer, walker, yoga doer. I miss the high that comes from all the other stuff that I can't do.

Oh, I had an MRI after the first time I started running. It was fine. I worked with a trainer and she said it was because of the SPD I got during pregnancy, so I've been working for a year on rehabbing my hips.
That is why I believe that if I can do it, anyone can do it! I didn't mean to imply that they should do it dangerously. But pain isn't always indicitive of a bigger problem. Especially if you're using parts of your body you have never used in ways you've never used them.

Agreed 100%. I support the idea behind this whole train of thought to the extent that the excuses are for cardiovascular/muscle "pain". That kind of pain means "I'm out of shape and need to get my ass moving" (I'm looking in a mirror here).
But it's dangerous to assume that because you can run, anyone can. A lifetime of relationships with orthopedists and chiropractors have taught me that not everyone SHOULD run, and that doesn't just mean those with pre-existing medical conditions. Women in particular are not built well for running (check your hip bone to knee ratio - if the discrepancy between them is greater that 2", your knees, hips and lower back will absorb the vast majority of the impact of running, potentially leading to long-term, irreversible joint damage). If you've got a fairly minor ratio with a relatively athletic build, you'll have fewer long-term running injuries. This is why men statistically end up with fewer running-related injuries- their joints are generally aligned pretty straight from top to bottom. I think it's unfair to suggest that anyone who doesn't run is making up excuses. I think it's accurate to suggest that anyone who doesn't exercise IS making up excuses (and I include myself in this category)
Why would people run if they genuinely don't enjoy it at all, feel they aren't built for it, and it hurts them during and after? I don't get it. There are so many other exercise methods that are much less taxing on the body.
As a former lover of the "sport" that is running, I miss it dearly. I LOVED RUNNING! I freakin loved it. I was reasonably fast too. My 5k was down to 21 minutes even. Unfortunately I have some screwed up foot issues which are not allowing me to run right now. But some day some day..
My hubby on the other hand is heavy and looks terribly uncomfortable when he runs. It hurts him. He hates it. So he doesn't run. He much prefers bicycling and other forms of exercise that are more enjoyable for him.
So is it a UO to think if you hate running, it hurts you, then just you know... do something else besides running?!!

I went back and re-read what I wrote and I think I made it clear that people who make up excuses are making up excuses.
The bolded statement makes it seem like you are suggesting that I said "everyone should run" and I judge people that don't.
I don't care if people don't run. I also don't care if people don't excercise. It's none of my business. But if you tell me you can't because exercise (in my case, running, because that's all I do) hurts and that's why you can't and you can't give me a reason beyond that, then, I'll probably dismiss what you're saying.

I ran a half marathon right before getting pregnant with E and at the end of it I thought to myself "WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE RUN TWICE THAT AMOUNT!". 13.1 miles (actually, the course was 13.8 according to my Garmin!) was torture. A marathon would make me drop dead.
Anyway - I went from never having run a mile to running a half marathon (in 2 hours, 18 minutes - no speed records for me) in less than a year. But, I would still never say "if I can do it, anyone can". Thats just not true - either because of injury, the way their body is built, or they don't have that masochistic running gen (running is boring, yo)
BUT - I will agree that I side eye people who say they can't find SOME type of exercise to do and that they enjoy.
And, I guess my UO is that I also side eye people who say they eat well and exercise but can't lose weight. I mean, sure there is a small portion of people with thyroid or other issues, but barring a medical issue like that you are eating too many calories. Sorry.

HAHA, I totally buy this! But that falls into the "I don't want to" or "I don't feel like it".
But if you are injured or running will cause legit injury, well, that was covered in my OP.

I hate running. Only a zombie apocalypse could get me to run. And I would still give up and quit pretty quickly. Give me an elliptical any day.
Yep, that's me. I HATE running, flat out don't like it and that's my excuse, and because I don't want too:)

Nah it wouldn't! If you can run a half with little or no issue, you can run a whole. It's really just about the training IMO. I've only run one marathon ever and at the finish I said never again no way. But I'd love to run another. It's kind of like childbirth I think.. you forget...
I don't think people should try to run even if they hate it or it hurts them. But yeah, there is SOME exercise to suit everyone if you want to find it. Bicycling for example is very low impact and can be fun. The best part about running I always found was how it is basically free, you don't have to go anywhere to do it, and you can get a great workout in a short time.
I also agree with you on the last part. I hear this all the time. I understand why behaviorally it's very difficult to lose weights as changing patterns and habits is so difficult. But what frustrates me is when people refuse to acknowledge how basic it is and try to convince me that they really eat barely anything at all yet baffling-ly haven't been losing weight.
From a "how the body works" standpoint it isn't difficult or confusing at all, it is very basic and a very small percentage of people have true metabolic issues/medical reasons for no weight loss on a restricted calorie diet. However it can be extremely difficult from a behavioral standpoint to lose weight. EXTREMELY difficult.
Why is it a good thing to not be able to walk for 4 days and have all your toenails fall off? I enjoyed what little running I've done, but H is always telling me all these stories about runners and everything they go through, and I'm like... people be crazy.
eta: I mean, isn't running itself kind of hard on your body? Even aside from any special medical concerns?
Those people do way more running than I do! That level of running is running for the sake of running (improving speed/time/etc). So, you can liken it to why someone plays football even though they know it's dangerous. I DO NOT THINK EVERYONE IS CAPABLE OF THAT KIND OF RUNNING!
The "light" running I do for exercise, is easier to talk about. I mean, up until my last race, I was running a 14 minute mile. I WALKED THAT IN HIGH SCHOOL for my presidential fitness test. I was a sloth then, but my hips were normal. And, I was 18.

I hate running until I'm doing it. Then it isn't so bad. And then I stop and I hate it again. But I sure do like the results of it. I need to do something about this giant ass I have and running is the only way I know how because I'm too cheap to join a gym and use their other equipment
All of this. I like it the most because it's free. I hate it until about 15 minutes in when I hit my stride and it doesn't hurt anymore
I LOVE smocked clothing. I live in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic (don't know what you call it). Smocked clothing seems to be very popular in the south...not the north. J&J is the only place I can get my smocked dresses around here. I know I can get things online and through Zulily but I prefer to see the quality of things before spending money on it.
I also like quality of quantity. The majority of the children's wardrobes comes from Gymboree because they live in the clothing FOREVER. I typically get 6+ months of wear out of clothing for them so I can justify spending more money on things that will survive their wear and tear.

Stupid old joints in young bodies. I need to swim, but I hate it. Yoga hurts too. Not like the good kind of "I'm pushing myself" kind of hurt, but the bad "I can feel my tibia and fibula rubbing my femur" kind of pain.
Man, running. I decided while I was in grad school that I'd dedicate some workout time to try and improve my running times. It was a huge fail. Despite following a program with time goals and intervals, I never could see much improvement on my times or distance and I was ending up with painful shins, aching hips and lower back, and parts of my feet were going numb. After six months I decided I'd had enough and went back to biking, yoga, hiking, and swimming and was MUCH happier. No (lingering) pain, all gain. I can't speak for anyone else, but I feel like I am definitely not cut out to be a runner!
