I would mark up the paper ignoring content. I woukd give it a lower grade based on your rubric-none of those reasons demonstrate any historical/literary/scientific significance Then ask the student to see you and explain that again along with explaining that we study hitler and nazi germany so that we will not allow atrocities like that to happen again. Then, I would send a copy of the paper to the principal.

I would say maybe you could talk to his parents...but it's possible that the apple didn't fall far from the tree, so that might be awkward. Just mark it up and tell him you were disappointed in his choice of person.

This is great advice. The reasons the students gave are NOT why we study Hitler. So their premise is just wrong.
I feel like you need to just grade it based off the writing and try to ignore the fact of who it is about. If you feel the need to do something more, maybe talk to the kids guidance councelor and get their opinion, or ask the head of the department/your principle what to do. I feel like any discussion just between you and the kid may be misconstrued, and you do still need to respect the kids beliefs and his freedom of speech.

I'd follow the first part, but I wouldn't do the second part. Unless you are for sure the child's paretns are not neo Nazis

I also think it's important if the student has a binder that says those things that he be referred to the principal and guidance counselor and potentially disciplined. When you are a child in school, freedom of speech does not apply if it can be construed as bullying and being hateful to others. School should be a place that is hate free for all students. He can be anti-semitic/white power on his own time. Schools have rules.
Ten bucks says the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. What grade do you teach again?
This is my fear, and I don't want YOU to get in trouble for hindering his free speech. Especially since it sounds like the writing prompt gave lots of flexibility (which is good, IMO) and what you said he wrote about was not false.
I mean, if I was a teacher and a kid wrote about how amazing the Pope was because they were smart, then I'd probably JOHM to myself, but the point wasn't to write about someone who EVERYONE agrees is awesome, right?

I think she does need to be careful; no one wants to be that teacher that ends up at the end of a KKK lawsuit for hindering free speech, but I think you do have some leeway here within the guidelines of the assignment. The reasons he gave weren't true. Yes, Hitler was smart, but that's not why we study him. We study him because of what he did, rather than who he was. That reasoning might give you a little room to get around a really sensitive and potentially sticky situation. The student wrote about what Hitler was like, which is not history. History studies people because of the effects they had, right @thadsrad?

This only works if the "we" in the promp excludes neo Nazis. Which, it probably didn't, because that'd be weird.

I think saying Hitler was smart is a subjective observation.
I think you must be pretty smart to manipulate that many people. I don't think it's fair to take away that designation because he used those powers for evil.

I definitely think it is worth discussing with the head of your department/principal (not sure of school teachers hierarchy). There may be actual protocol in place for dealing with this since that paired with the binder can easily translate into bullying- if not current, then possibly developing. I know there are a lot of initiatives to stop bullying in schools and this may fall under that category.
If it weren't for the binder, I might think otherwise since I did a lot of studying about the Holocaust in school and in relation to work (I worked at a Holocaust museum), but this clearly is larger and I think you need to make sure it is addressed by someone higher and possibly with more authority than you. Does the student have other teachers? Maybe request some dialogue with them and a higher up to see if there are any additional signs of this kind of behavior?
Good luck and keep us posted. I am kind of curious to see how something like this would be handled.

No, I mean being considered smart by some is not a solid reason to study someone. Nazi kid makes weak points.
Also, I have always said that Hitler rose to power at the right place at the right time. Germany was beaten and starving after WWI. Hitler promised both prosperity and a scapegoat, and sadly a lot of people ate that shit up.

I agree with your analysis although I think it is more complicated. But that is probably for another thread.

I totally agree.
