There is a new XBox and Playstation coming out this year (I think... I lose track) and my DH would tell you to wait for one of those because they'll be so much better.
All the guys in our family play XBox. There is someway that they can play each other at their own houses. They love it! Unfortunately, I don't know any specifics as I am not a gamer at all.

I would get him a WII U they are pretty new (released in November) and they have better graphics, etc than the WII. More along the lines of an xbox. It's what my H really wants. It has the normal nintendo games and, if it doesn't already have them, it will be getting more games that are traditionally on the xbox/playstation. Now that it has upgraded graphics, there is more opportunity for those kinds of games to be on it.
Well my DH would say you need the new one. It all seems the same for me, except with a new system coming out you won't be able to buy new games, only the old ones. Because the new system will play old games but the old won't be able to play anything that comes out now.
We have a WiiU (told you DH was a techie!) and it is both. The handheld piece lets you play on just your screen or you can play on the bigger screen. And some games (like Donkey Kong) actually have you switch back and forth. But you still need the big piece to put the disk in and the handheld wirelessly connects.
Maybe you could find a food experience? Our city has something coming up where you eat at certain restaurants and I guess you buy tickets for a special menu. Or cooking class? Or some sort of food and wine/beer pairing? If you're in a bigger city, maybe a brewery tour if there are micro breweries in the area?
Hmmm... I had seen the Wii U and I thought it was a hand-held system because of the little screen on the controller. But I looked it up again guess it hooks up to the TV like the others...
That could be an option. It does have the game Call of Duty which I've heard people like.
There is a handheld controller, but it is used as a controller and as a handheld device. My understanding is that you can be playing a game on the tv with it and then if someone wants to use the tv for something else, you can continue the game on the controller itself.
Do you know what kind of games your H likes? (I don't remember if you said that already) If you know, I could ask my H which games he thinks your H would like. He might be able to suggest a couple, if you decided to go with the WII U.
Oh, and I would also say to go with the newest system. It will last longer, as far as being able to play newest games, etc.
The Wii U is looking promising. The only thing is the cost. We usually don't spend that much money without running it by one another... Maybe I'll just run the price range by him and not tell him what it is, so I'd only spoil part of the surprise.
He likes first-person shooters and sports games. I looked at the games available for the Wii U and they do seem to have those - Call of Duty and Madden would probably start him off nicely.
And I saw that the Wii U does play original Wii games, so there's my mini-selfish part of the gift.
My H thinks the virtual console is cool because of all the old games. He also said it is backwards compatible with WII games. So, there are a lot of game options with the WII U.
My H said if you get the WII U, you should also get the pro controller, it's more like an xbox controller (I think to go along with the call of duty/madden).

I vote XBOX. You can watch Netflix through XBOX live. Also ask him what games he would be playing. PlayStation has games that cannot be played on XBOX, so that would be something to consider. PlayStation can also play Blu-Ray, where XBOX cannot.
We don't have a PlayStation just because there aren't many PlayStation games we want. Check out the Lego games, they are super fun, not fast paced or bloody! You can get them for XBOX or PlayStation. And with XBOX, if you get Kinect, there are a bunch of fun games for that. I like Disneyland Adventures, it's super cute!
