This is my biggest complaint about the open. I am not competing, but I workout where they are very serious about the standards, but you know there are crappy judges out there. And if this had not been circulating on youtube, his score would have remained. (And you have to watch the guy behind him when he does his DLs - I don't think he opened his hips on any of them!) You KNOW this is happening all over the place. They were just "lucky" enough to have found this video.
I'm really curious to see the video of the 420 reps.
A new addition this year is the ability for anyone who passed the judges course to judge video submissions. If you click on a video next to someone's name you will see the number of yes & no votes. Too many no votes & it's reviewed which I think is great.
I think it's great that they are following through with standards, but it's not like people with poor form will make it to the Games. They will crash & burn at Regionals. It happens every year.

I'm glad to see they are taking action on poor form and poor judging. Like softspot said, people who make it through to regionals with crappy form probably wouldn't make it far there anyways, but I am happy to see the standards being upheld. I've watched some local CF competition (not the open) at the box I belong to, and it is amazing to see how some athletes try to skirt around the standards like opening hips, full extension, etc. It's frustrating to see people, for lack of a better word, cheating.

I'm glad CF DQ'd him. I agree w/ PPs that the cheaters will never make it through Regionals though it's a shame that a Regionals spot is taken away from someone deserving when that happens.
I do kind of feel bad for the guy. His name and face are all over the place now and, while personal responsibility is huge, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't realize his form was so against RX considering he posted the video. Fault also lies with the judges, box owner, and other coaches at the box for letting this fly.
Do you think he cheated, or he just didn't know better? The box owner responded to the allegations and provided another video where he said the guy was doing the move correctly, and he wasn't. Bad trainer? Bad Box?

If he's been Crossfitting for more than a few months he should know better what the standards are for things like the deadlift and box jumps (i.e. full extension of hips, etc.), however I doubt he went into the workout actually planning to cheat - he was probably so caught up in the moment(s) that he didn't realize he wasn't do the moves correctly - maybe somebody should have shouted something to him during the WOD to open up his hips more? I know when I'm in the heat of the WOD that I zone out sometimes and my coaches will yell at me to extend fully, or open my hips, or whatever and I have to correct myself because I don't even realize I'm doing the moves wrong.

His judge and those around him should've definitely been doing this! That's why I kind of feel bad for him and fault the judge and box a lot-- if he wasn't standing fully or opening his hips, etc. the judge should've been saying "NO REP" so he'd know to fix his form.

See, and this is why I'm wondering if he was never taught the correct form in the first place. It sounds like no one in the Box knew how to do this.
He went to regionals last year & is a top male competitor out of SoCal. He knows the standards.
eta: There was some debating about one of his videos last year also, but he wasn't disqualified. The open 12 videos were removed after he was disqualified yesterday.

Ah, I missed that part. Thanks!
I didn't know that either! Feeling less sorry for him by the minute then...
not a CFer but i watched annie's 13.2 video late last week, and i have to ask why she wasn't DQed. it seemed as though the majority of her push presses weren't fully locked out, and many of her DLs didn't look to form either. is that a case of her being the reigning Fittest Woman on Earth, or am i just wrong w/r/t her form?
Nope, there has been lots of chatter about her form as well. She did get no-repped a few times, but HQ is saying nill at this point about it.
I just can't believe that his first rep at 3,2,1 go was a power snatch & it was counted towards one of his shoulder to overheads. Even a rookie can surely understand what shoulder to overhead means.

I don't think he did anything on purpose (unless he's an utter moron since the video was posted). HOWEVER, HE is a coach at that box. The people judging at the box are supposed to be certified to know the standards and it appalling that NO ONE there apparently knows how to do a deadlift or a box jump. I am very much a recreational crossfitter and not competing in the open (and never have), but I know when my form is not right or my hips are open, etc. And when I do WODs in regular classes, if my rep isn't up to standard, I don't count it!
And for someone who mentioned that he might have just been in the zone -the judges are there for a reason - they are counting your reps, so if you get to deadlift no. 8 and you don't open your hips, they tell you no. 9 is a no rep and you have to do 2 more, not just 1. My box does the open WOD as one big group and there were plenty of no reps for a variety of reasons.
If you watch the guy behind this guy in the video, it looks like most of his reps should not be reps. It is just crazy to me. And while people like this won't make it out of regionals, they also may take regionals spots from others who do meet the standards. (Not that I think this guy cheated, but there was drama at the 2011 regionals (in the northeast I think) because a male competitor who was a possible games competitor was no rep'ed over and over on his KB swings (where they had to do 100) - people the region were pissed, but props to the judge who gave the no reps to a big competitor. And like my coach says, if the standard is to do the movement while sticking your tongue out, that's the standard you are held to.

Yeah, I think the key here is that he is Level 1 Certified and a coach. I certainly feel bad for him because his judge should've no repped him IMMEDIATELY, allowed him to make the correction, then continue the workout. Or they should've watched the video, recognized the errors, then repeated the workout. But for a Level 1 trainer and his judge to both feel like these movements were sufficient is the problem-and they must have, seeing as he posted the video himself. And judging by the guy behind him, I think that entire box is missing the mark on movement standards.
At regionals, the judging is HARSH. Elite athletes collapse because they cannot manage to keep the kettlebell straight overhead, which should be a basic standard in every box... My boss/our head coach judged at the Midatlantic regional two years ago, when an elite athlete was no repped on KBS almost 50 times. He had no idea what the standard of movement was and couldn't make the correction on the spot. Sucks, but that's why the standards exist.
It does suck for this guy that he is being made the example, and there are certainly other people out with the same problem.
