I don't have any recs for you, but just to let you know clothing from VS is hit or miss, but I'd say it's on par with something like...NY&Co for the most part. It's not Ann Taylor in quality, but it's not Old Navy either.
Can't click on the link since it's blocked at work so I cant comment on that dress.
I bought a couple at Ross - just simple jersey for about $20. I'm between sizes right now so I'm not buying investment pieces.
I stopped buying VS clothing. Nothing fits right and it annoys me. I'm 5'11"...pretty sure it's my height that doesn't work with their clothes. Oh and I hate that all their models look anorexic and 17, I'm fairly curvy and I can't ever tell how the clothes will actually fit me.

1. Do they sell them at brick and mortar stores so I can try them on? Sak's, Neiman's, and Bloomingdales carry them. Zappos and 6PM have them online as well. Depending on where you are they will be there within 24 hours of ordering. 2. How is their sizing? I only have the shorter length caftan ones. I'm not sure how the maxis run since length can be an issue. Mav would know better on this since mine are a different style than what you're looking for. 3. Do they ever go on sale?6PM has them around half off, but their return policy is not as nice as Zappos. Zappos has some styles on sale too at the moment. 4. How is the quality? Quality is excellent. I have the shorter ones and the fabric is heavier than most knits. It has good stretch, but they keep their shape really well.
My favorite Maxi dresses are CK from TJMaxx. They're all about $39.99 and the cut is really flattering. I have one with straps and one with short sleeves and I like them both.
I cant find them online but I bought two super cute ones at Belk that were only around $30. They are jersey and I think they hang and flatter more than cotton.
I was also coming in here to recommend Rachel Pally! I have a lot of her stuff. I've bought it all on Shopbop and Revolve.
ETA: I like her stuff b/c it is SUPER long - I'm 5'10" and most of it is a bit long for me still. I don't know your height, but just be aware that unless you are pushing 6', you will probably have to get it altered. RP stuff also runs quite large - you should size down at least one size.
I LOVE Rachel Pally!! I just wish her stuff wasn't so pricey! My one and only RP dress is a size XS but Piperlime told me that particular dress ran a size big. My dress has an unfinished hem as well. Some things do go on sale, keep an eye on Piperlime and Revolve - also Revolve often has coupons.
Nordstrom sent out an email with quite a few yesterday. There were a few cute ones under $100. I also search the Piperlime "Girl on a Budget" for things like maxi dresses that I'm not sure will get a bunch of wear.
