How the heck are we supposed to get everything to Florida?
We are flying there, with four dogs in cabin. I have no idea how we are supposed to take all our jewelry, liquids (stuff like shampoo/conditioner that we have extra unopened and is $$), family photos, personal videotapes, important papers and whatever else they won't move, with us on the plane.
We were expecting to take some of that stuff with us on the plane/as checked baggage, (or arrange to have it sent), but their list is a lot longer than we expected. What a pita. And a waste of $$$.
I have brand new cleaners, lotions, batteries and other stuff that I had multiples of and now I will have to give it all away. We were already trying to use everything that is already opened, but had no idea that we wouldn't be able to move unopened sundries.
Any ideas how we can get a few rocks there? lol
They aren't huge landscape boulders or anything, but one of them is kind of heavy, and they say that they will not move rock gardens or landscape rocks. They are something that we are quite sentimental about. DH's dad was a geologist and they belonged to him. We brought them from DH's parent's house when we moved here. DH was thinking that he might be able to put them in the trunk of his car and they could be transported that way....I don't know.
We can't take our Softub either. I could understand if it was a regular spa and weighed a zillion pounds, but it weighs very little, and doesn't take up that much room either. We aren't even bringing much furniture, so it isn't like there isn't room, but it is not allowed. We probably weren't going to bring it, but there is something about someone telling you that you can't have it, that will make you want it. ;p

Is it one of the big name movers? Ours packed liquids and stuff - all in one box - with the understanding that it was at our risk. Could you just pack those things yourself? One of the things our last movers said was that there were things they were unwilling to take responsibility for packing (like liquids) but if you wanted to do it, they'd load it on the truck.
I agree with your H about putting the rocks in his car. I'm guessing they won't move them because there's no good way to pack them.
Can you take the spa apart and have them move it in pieces?
If you can load the rocks on a pallet(s) FedEx or ups freight will ship them. Our shipments of 150# are usually $75 or so. You could wrap them and strap them to the pallet and they should be safe.

It is supposed to be a big mover, but I think it will be contracted out to someone ...they gave us a name that we have never heard of as the local contact.
We might send some of the stuff with DH's office. I figure they would be less likely to screw up and lose paperwork or an external hard drive, if they are moving an entire division/office of that kind of stuff. DH is bringing home a couple of boxes for us to pack and he'll take them in to work next week.
One of his engineers had the movers pack her house yesterday. They told her that they weren't supposed to do it, but they packed all of the liquids in a plastic bag inside a garbage can and taped it closed.
Ours did move some stuff on the don't pack list, but not everything, like they left the really dangerous/volatile stuff. Things like your papers I'd scan first and then they will probably take them. They just aren't insured.
Our movers packed liquids like cleaning supplies and shampoo, even though those items were on the list of stuff they don't pack. They wouldn't pack our aerosol cans, lighter fluid or paint, which is understandable. I didn't expect them to take hazardous items.
We had one car shipped, and the rules for that move were that we couldn't pack any items in the car. So, I'm not sure that will work to transport your rocks.
Oh, our movers took alcohol too, even though that was on the list of stuff they wouldn't move. Good thing because we collect wine and had a very well-stocked bar. 18 boxes full! It would have sucked to have thrown out or given away all of that!
Yeah, ours packed a lot of things they said they wouldn't pack. And we used packers!
They would not move our alcohol, or items like gas cans, motor oil, paint, lighter fluid, etc. Since we were driving one of our cars, we just took all that ourselves. Other than that - all liquids went with them.
Pack it yourself and don't label it as liquids. We have moved 3 times in the last 5 years and it is what our movers have always said was fine. That being said I wouldn't do cleaning supplies though b/c they can be flameable. We did have one mover who was fine moving those things so you never know.

If it's stuff you have to have, ship it UPS. You can also ship the papers and jewelry. UPS is less likely to lose it than your airline.

Being someone that ships dozens of packages with ups a day I would disagree. I've never actually lost anything flying, we have to make claims all the time on last packages. Also UPS damages boxes often.
That being said, shipping is probably your best option to keep your life a little less stressful. Scan all your documents that are easily replaceable. Invest in waterproof envelopes to protect against damage. Photograph all jewelry and over ensure the package.
If you can keep your boxes around 20-25 pounds they shouldn't be damaged as much.

My jewelry is going to be in a carry on. The good stuff, anyway.
UPS is the last shipping company I would use for anything like that. We get a fair number of deliveries, and the only boxes that arrive damaged (as if someone tampered with it) or have actually had items stolen from them have been UPS. So often that if I am expecting something expensive to be delivered UPS, I make sure to be home when it is delivered and I keep my eye out for the guy (in case he doesn't knock), so that I can inspect the package for damage and have them note it if there is any.
I've noticed that anything I order from camera stores seems to arrive with damage, but nothing from pet supply stores does.
