OMG why? I would have gotten in contact with a rescue/humane society for the dog. I wonder if you could let one know about the sale and see if they could go get the dog?

OMFG, that's tragic. I once adopted a dog whose owner either died or went to a nursing facility. At least the person's family took the dog to a shelter, where I found her. She was a great dog.
I would be giving the Humane Society or a rescue a heads up about that. Those third party estate companies don't care - they just want to move the stuff.
How is the dog potentially getting an immediate home this way vs risking not being adopted out of a shelter and put down there worse? I'm sure he'll end up at the shelter if he doesn't find a home at the sale. His chances are probably better at the sale.
