We have one. It's an InStep, which is one of the cheaper brands. It's only used occasionally and has held up well.
They definitely have to wear helmets and I think I remember reading that they should be 18mos+. I'm not planning to put DD (8mo) in it for a long time. We have a double and bought it with her in mind, but we're still going to wait until next spring or so.
My friends have the Burley and love it. However, they mentioned that they didn't use it until their kids were a little older. Let me know which one you decide on!
I have a Trek one. It is almost 15 years old. It is awesome. I use it almost daily. Spring for a lighter framed trailer as they get heavy quickly when you add a kid.

We have an instep one as well. We got it on clearance at Target for something like $80. H has taken DS on a few spins around the neighborhood with it and it seems to work out fine. DS was 16 months when he first rode in it. Yes, you need a helmet.

We have a Chariot (not sure what model, but it can hold 2 children), and it gets the job done. I would have been happy buying a cheaper trailer, but I deferred to DH on this purchase since he swore it was superior in terms of steering and other mumbo jumbo. I never plan to use it myself, so I console myself with the fact that Chariots have good resale value in our area.
We absolutely use a helmet, and DS never rode in it until after he was a year old.
We have the Instep Quick and EX and I like it. I can haul one or both kids in it pretty easily. The only thing I don't like is the "brake" is nothing more than a nylon starp you hook through the wheels.
