Our dryer has been leaving the clothes damp for a few weeks. It is a fancy digital set, so I switched over to using the timed dry rather than the sensor dry, and they were still sometimes damp. It was getting hot, so we knew it wasn't the heating element. I was having to dry everything twice.
Dh cleaned out the back and the vent hose really well and was at a loss for what else to do - he's handy but knows nothing about dryers. Then a few days ago it totally quit. It turned on, made a horrible noise and then all it would do when you pressed start was click.
The repair man was here for 2 minutes and pulled one of my kid's socks out of the blower fan. Apparently it was stuck in there, so the dryer kept overheating and shutting down before it finished it's cycle. He's also replacing a few minor parts that look a bit worn out while he's in there anyway and then my dryer is fixed!
I am so relieved! With 2 kids, a husband who changes his clothes every day (two outfits every day..work clothes and home clothes), and a daycare I do a ton of laundry. It was really frustrating to have to go down there and restart the dryer all the time and being without it for a few days, my laundry is already piling up!
I've always wondered if one of my kids' tiny socks has ever gotten lodged somewhere in my washing machine because it now regularly tells me that the drainage is blocked when, in fact, it's not. I have to turn it off, then turn it back in and have it run a spin cycle to wring the excess water out.

Do you have a HE toploader? This happened to me all the time with our old ($%&*!) washer. Only running an extra cycle never worked.

I use a lingerie bag for DS's socks. This way there's no chance of them getting lost in the washer/dryer and no searching through a whole basket of laundry for a match.
