The band is supposed to be tight, like really really uncomfortably tight. The band is what is supposed to hold you up, not the straps.
It shouldn't be so tight that I feel bruised the next day. The one I'm wearing is uncomfortably tight and it's a 36 on the loosest clasp.
That other one is just wrong.
Is your new one a brand you're not used to? I've found that not all brands are exactly the same. @mrsspunky is right in that they're supposed to be tight - especially when you have bigger boobs.
eta: I wouldn't say it should cause you actual pain though. Since you're pregnant, you might want to look into soft cup bras too, those might feel better to you.
I just did the two-finger under the band test because I'm bored. Apparently my size is all wrong since there is enough rooms to stick my leg under the band (if my body could contort that way). I'm an A-cup, though, so it's all moot.
Mine too. A cup or B cup depending on the bra. But it's stretchy. Are bigger cup sized bra bands not stretchy?

They're stretchy, but you're supposed to get a band size small enough to cut off blood supply for maximum support.
I was reading this post feeling my back fat ooze from under my fist-able band, so I took the quiz. those hors make me give my email and then told me to "take my #6 and go home"
"Congratulations, you have archetypical breasts! This means that almost all bra styles should work for you, so we don't have any specific tips for your body type."
I was fitted before I got pregnant at a 36F. At my largest during pregnancy I was a 38GG. After I had Edmund I went back to wearing a 36GG. I continued wearing those until they just always felt like they were ready to fall off because they were too loose. I went and got fitted last August at a 34G. I have never been that small. I've also lost 15lbs from my pre pregnancy weight and am the lightest I have been in almost 10 years. My bras tend to hurt for a day or two and then I get used them and they are fine. I've only ever been fitted at Nordstrom but love them and love the fact that they will price match if you find the bra cheaper elsewhere.
They should be uncomfortable but not painful in my opinion and they should t be uncomfortable for more than a couple days. If they cause you physical pain though they are definitely not right in some aspect of fit.
In honor of this poll I'm wearing my Intimacy bra today and giving it another chance. I can fit more than 2 fingers between the band and my body but it still digs into my sides. But for the money I paid for it I want to get it stretched out a bit.
Bras suck. Flameful: I wear bralettes almost every day. Comfort of a sports bra with the discrete straps of a regular bra. Small boobs ftw! (For once.)
