The band is supposed to be tight, like really really uncomfortably tight. The band is what is supposed to hold you up, not the straps.
It shouldn't be so tight that I feel bruised the next day. The one I'm wearing is uncomfortably tight and it's a 36 on the loosest clasp.
That other one is just wrong.
I agree. I get that a tight band may be a "proper" fit, but fuck it, I will deal with straps that fall down a little but over time over a bra that bruises my ribs. The Intimacy bras I have all feel like a freaking straightjacket for my boobs.
I'm a 30B (or A and a half) and went to Intimacy for a strapless bra that would stay up - I was sold on the fact they did alterations, since 30Bs are so rare to find.
They sold me a $125 Marie-Jo bra - when I wore it (thankfully not to a special event), I felt it was crushing me. You couldn't even slide one finger under the band. I was devastated, since everyone seems to rave about Intimacy. I figured they just couldn't work their magic on smaller busts.
This is why 85% of women or whatever are wearing the wrong size bra. I'd hate to see how you all would have fared in the time of corsets and petticoats, lol.
A bra that fits properly - in terms of measurements, not comfort - makes everything else about you look better. Your posture is better, your clothes lay nicer. I can definitely tell when a bra is too worn even with adjusting straps and hooks and whatnot, and it is definitely before it "wears out".

Women's lib, man! *burns bra*
Maybe when there's an equivalently tight ball cradle for men to improve their posture, I'll start buying bras that cause physical pain. Because the few times I've gotten them as tight as they're supposed to be, I was miserable.

I really want to get fitted, but there's just no way. I have very tender ribs from fibromyalgia, and I just can't wear a 34/36 band, even though I know it's what technically "fits". I've been rocking soft cup bras that make my boobs look saggy and awful, but it's better than excruciating pain.

I loved my corset thing for under my wedding dress, then again when I sat down, my boobs were basically at my chin, lol! But they looked good.
Swizz, I have seen pictures of you and there is no way you are a 36. I am a 36 and I am a fatty in comparison.
I wore a 34DD before getting pg and it fit great, probably loose in comparison to what it "should" be. Maybe my rib cage has grown with pregnancy.
I'm in a 36G right now for pregnancy as well - and wouldn't call myself a fatty, lol (in normal pre-pregnancy clothes I'm a 10 and I'm 5'9"). I was a 32FF before getting pregnant with my first, and a 34G before getting pregnant this time. Pregnancy definitely changes things both in cup size and band size.
ETA: Just a warning, the pain is likely going to get worse. : ( I would err on the size of a bigger band and smaller cup because as your belly grows, the underwire in the cup will cut into your belly. Awesome, right? It happened last time for me and just started happening again. It sucks.

I figure the miserable look on my face cause by my too-tight bra cancels out the better posture, etc.
I have one bra that fits like it's supposed to, and it makes my boobs look amazing. But I rarely wear it because it's so uncomfortable.
This reminds me of the expensive bra (an I!) I bought once. I never wear it because it's so uncomfortable and leaves marks. I thought maybe it was too small but maybe this is an expensive bra thing. I recently found great bras at an outlet though. When I am able to see the tags I'll tell you the brand.
I have to say the first ever bra I had in the right size was torturous but it does get better. To top it off, the first day I wore it was to an all-day family event outside in 90* weather.

What is your definition of "looks better"? Because if skinny = better = painful, then that's insane.

Breasts are more lifted and centered, posture is straighter (the boning in the sides of the bras I have to wear helps), less back fat/bulge (a problem area for me), and yes, thinner.
I am tempted to go home, take pictures of myself in a bra that fits vs. one that doesn't (I have them for lounging or when I am not going out) to see if you can tell the difference. I know I can see it in the mirror.

Don't care.
Amen! I'll wear cute shoes that are uncomfortablle, but at least I can sit down to ease the pain. I refuse to wear bras that are uncomforatable.

I know people say this is true, but I don't get how a really tight band helps this.

This occurred to me, too. The tighter the band, the more pronounced my back fat becomes. It's pushed down. Like wearing too-tight jeans cause a muffin top.
theintended I have no idea but I can truly see a difference. And IMO I have a serious back fat problem - gross, I know - so I am hyper aware.
ETA: I think it has to do with the migration of the back strap. When my band is super tight, it gets stuck in place and hidden away. When it is too loose, it rides up and the back fat sneaks out so to speak. LOL such a weird conversation.
Yeah, if the band is too tight, you'd be able to see the above-the-waist equivalent of muffin top under form-fitting clothes. Not exactly my definition of "looks better."
Another Intimacy rant: They asked me what I used to wash my lingerie, and I told them Woolite. And they were horrified and claimed that Woolite stretches elastic and ruins the shape. Maybe they're full of shit and were just trying to sell Forever New, but that's the kind of reaction I'd expect if I told them I threw my bras in the washer - with heavy-duty Tide, and without a lingerie bag - and tossed them in the dryer.
Well, I bought the Forever New (which is soap flakes), and found that when my undies dried, they were covered with flaky residue. Even when I put the detergent in a container with water and vigorously shook it, the flakes wouldn't dissolve. The same happened when I washed my everyday clothes with it in the machine - you'd think the agitation would break down the flakes.
The band is supposed to be tight, like really really uncomfortably tight. The band is what is supposed to hold you up, not the straps.
This is absolutely NOT true. I'm a 36FF and my bras are super comfy and not very tight at all. The girls and up and perky and none of my bras hurt, fit wrong, or feel 'uncomfortably tight.' They should be fitted, but not more that that. If they are, its because the cups aren't fitted correctly and that is the most important thing.
Edit to note, Freya brand bras are amazingly comfortable to me. I love Nordstroms for bras, fittings, returns, etc. Definitely worth it. I will say I got compliments on my shape and figure so I promise the bra is fitting just as it needs too...
