In our old house we had several components. They were on a ladder bookcase next to the fireplace. We had plaster walls so we couldn't run cords behind them without serious work, so we used cord covers and painted them to match our wall color. You can see a pic in my old bio, but people would constantly ask us how they were attached and could not tell they were there.

We had the guy who installed the tv and added power put the cords through the wall to come out at the bottom right side. Our fireplace sticks out so we put a bookcase to the right of it and all the entertainment systems are on the bottom shelf.

We don't have anything near the TV. All the wires are behind the drywall. The hdmi cords drop down to the basement and go back up to the perpindicular wall next to the couch where we have the cable box/DVR and DVD player on a table.

The table with the DVD and DVR is between the tree and the end of the couch in this picture. The remotes still work fine. But an IR repeater was our fall back plan.
We can control everything through our tv. They (the tv and receiver / dvd player) are connected with an HDMI cable that runs behind the fireplace mantle. The receiver and dvd player are in a built in that used to hold the old school tv.

There are big built-in bookshelves next to our fireplace/TV downstairs so the digital cable box and DVD player go on the shelf next to it. They are connected through the wall and the back room (sump pump room) that goes behind the fireplace.
Thanks for the repeater idea. I'm going to order one. We have a wide mantel, currently our component boxes sit on one end of the mantel. I'd love to get them off of there.
