I may dd since I am pretty googleable due to my blog so please don't quote:)
I have been working at my new job for about 6 months now. I like the people and the company, but feel more and more overwhelmed every day. I realize that sales is not a good fit and I think I would be better in a different roll. I want to meet with HR to see if I can apply into a different role, even though they generally require you to be in a role for 1 year first. Would it be bad to ask? I don't want to put a target on my back but I don't think I can do another 6 months and would prob try and find another job. Am I right in assuming anything I talk to HR about would be confidential?
I feel like this is very company dependent. Personally, I wouldn't trust HR to keep things confidential, even if they're supposed to. Do you have specific positions in mind that you'd like to apply for? What's the potential backlash from your current boss/department if they find out?
There is a specific job posting on our site I want to apply for. I am just nervous that if it isn't kept confidential it will make them more apt to get rid of me if my numbers ever miss. I have good business results and am doing well right now I just really am not happy at all. If HR gives me the go ahead I would have to tell my boss I was applying to the new role anyway.

Yeah I would not trust HR at all re: confidentiality.
I have started casually looking outside the company but really need to make some moves on that. If I was suddenly let Howe would be okay short term but it wouldn't be good if it lasted more than a little while.
Any advice on addressing a short time at a company on a résumé/cover letter. I want to start sprucing mine up. I was thinking along the lines of "been working at x since moving to the Boston area this fall but am continuing to look for a better fit for my skills etc".
