We both work in the same district. We are negotiating a contract. She has 16 years in and if the new contract goes thru she will get a $22,000 a year raise and make over $80,000.I have two masters and 12 years in and will get a $3,000 dollar raise and make less then $55,000. They asked us to stop doing extra paid jobs. I can't because I can't afford to. She is mad at me now. I want to send her my bills and tell her to pay them.
Both teach in same school district. District & teachers are negotiating a new contract.
If contract goes through, SIL with a BS and no masters but 16 years in district gets 22K raise to over 80K per year.
OP has 12 in years in district, BS and 2 masters but would only get a 3K raise and be making under 55K. She needs to work extra jobs to make ends meet.
Teacher's union wants all teachers to quit their extra jobs - not sure if that is jobs like working part-time in retail or if they mean coaching sports, advising clubs, etc. but they feel if everyone quits their secondary jobs the district will be willing to approved the contract.

My IL's are always mad at me. That's why we do holidays with just me, S and H. I'm totally serious. I'm tired of the drama so we see them when it's not a holiday so they can't screw it up, lol.
She can kiss your butt. Your post made complete sense to me. My mom does security duty and a club to earn extra money to pay for my sister's tuition. I hope you get a better contract nonetheless.
The old timers like it this way because they make all the money.
It is ridiculous when unions eat their own like this. It happens again and again. They vote for highly preferential treatment for those who worked there before x date or are part of niche groups. Then over time, that portion ages out and the younger generation feels legitimately screwed over by the union. They understandably aren't as committed to the union causes since the union repeatedly has thrown them under the bus. Over time, the negotiating power of the union drops. So predictable and yet it continues.
I understand bc it's the teacher's union that is asking all teachers to stop any extra duties outside the bare minimum provisions of their contract, conceivably to force administration to raise everyone's wages.
As with any union situation, those that do not follow the recommendation of the union are looked at pretty harshly by others.
Sucks for people who cannot afford to stop the extra jobs bc extra jobs = extra money.
Obviously daisy's SIL is in a better financial position to follow the unions recommendations. But it sucks she's letting job politics get in the way.
Yes she is. I cannot quit because one day I would like to be an adminstrator and quitting is looked frowned upon. It is a political game. I don't want to argue with her we both are in different postions.
I think I would be mad too. I get OP's point but she is still better off with the union than without and they won't strike forever. I would be more interested in trying to change the union.

Whhhaaaaa? I mean, I get the gist of your post because I'm a teacher (although yeah, it was not worded well). But in what kind of backward district there be THAT big of a salary gap based on years and education. In my district, 12 years plus a MA would be making about $8K more than someone with just a BA and 15 years. This (my district) is not atypical regarding lane change salary for most districts from what I've heard.
I'm just really confused about how this happened...

Many people are. It was what people voted on in the past and never changed.
My guess is there's a big bump once you hit 15 yrs in.
They want to eliminate that. That's what the fighting is over. I will only make $3,000 more then a brand new person.
I meant generic you, just as an explaination for why your SIL would make so much more. They the school district or they the teachers want to eliminate the 15 yr bump?
And an experienced teacher with several yrs in making only 3,000 more than a newbie is BS.
