They want to eliminate that. That's what the fighting is over. I will only make $3,000 more then a brand new person.
I meant generic you, just as an explaination for why your SIL would make so much more. They the school district or they the teachers want to eliminate the 15 yr bump?
And an experienced teacher with several yrs in making only 3,000 more than a newbie is BS.
The school district wants to spread it out more but because we have so many teachers at max pay. They run the union. Your pension is based on your last three years of pay. They want their money.

If the Union wants people like Daisy to not take on side projects, then they have to be just as willing to fight for her as the oldies making a shitton. What's the union doing for her? Screw that.
As a teacher in a craptastic union- I'm lol'ing at changing the union or finding a new district.
Union leaders are elected. It is imminently possible to run and change the union, and I think it is naive to think anyone is better without a union. I was in a union when I was a public employee and, yes, the people with less seniority got screwed but it all comes around eventually and weakening the union is NOT the right answer.

Oh i loved my union- my district union sucked, but the PA teachers union was seriously helpful when I was furloughed. I think there's a lot that needs to be changed and sometimes unions don't make that easy. For instance- I don't think tenure is necessary, but a union would never agree to that.
