We get an two extra weeks paid, and it goes up with tenure (i.e. time at the company, not in the industry). By the time we have a second, I'd get 3 or 4. It's the ONLY benefit where my company is above average, on everything else we don't get much (yes, #fwp). We have done a really good job clamping down on spending since Christmas, trying to save for baby gear and time off. A lot depends on how long UW lets her work part time, how many days/week that ends up being.
I am going to take a week or two at birth as vacation, and then once she starts going back two or more days a week (probably 1 or 2 month, maybe 3) I'll take either two or three months off to get all the way through peak crying before babyniq gets to daycare. So probably 2 and maybe the full 3.
My h does not get any paid time off but can use sick/vacation benefits for up to 12 weeks, or take the full 12 weeks unpaid. With bjl, he took the Wednesday we had her off, Thursday off, half days Friday, Monday, Tuesday, and went back to work full time on Wednesday. My mom took 2 weeks sick-time and stayed wih us, so he didn't really neeeed to be there. MIL doesn't work, so she also visited daily and cooked and cleaned for us.
I don't know what this time will be like. I hope he takes a few days more, just for some extra bjl time bc she will probably be slightly neglected, I'll want someone here for her.
DH is self employed and works from home so he can pretty much make his own hours and vacation time. He is currently doing contract work for a company and for that he typically is working at fairly random times throughout the day/week so it's still really flexible. We haven't discussed yet if he will do 100% time off for a given period of time. But, I'm not sure he'll need to...we'll see!

J took two weeks, but it was a bit different since the first week after M was born, she was in the NICU. So, he took that entire week off to be with us, and then he went back to work for a week once we got home (MIL came and stayed with us), and then he took another week off. I think after that, he took a day off here or there, but after 3 weeks, it was pretty much M and I at home.

I think it's just not on their minds as much because they're not the ones hauling a baby in their belly 24/7, which to us is a constant reminder that, hey, there's a baby coming and we need to prepare! I think if you give them small reminders every now and then until you get the information you need, you should be good.
Of course, if they just blow you off without getting the needed information, then it's time for a big talk about how important planning for time off after baby comes is!
