Ds's legs chafe horribly when he swims for long periods of time. I just bought him some speedo jammers to wear under his trunks. I am more than miffed that I had to buy $25 underwear for his $15 swimsuits. Lol.
Also, I felt slightly pervy buying the smallest speedos they make...

Lol, when my brother was 4 or 5 my parents signed him up for swim team; and when my dad brought a tiny Speedo in the dressing room for my brother to try it on, my brother put his little hand up and said "STOP. Does Mom know about this?"

My boys wear the speedo jammers for swim team, too. When they are swimming recreationaly, they wear regular trunks. M has now decided that he doesn't like just wearing the jammers when waiting to race, so he asked if he can wear trunks over them at swim meats and before practice (he has to wait through J's practice).
If your son is asking to wear both, I'd of course agree, but if it's your issue, just let him wear the one. He'll feel so much lighter and free in the water and when he's running around, and there's no reason to make him self conscious before he is on his own.
