Breakfast Sausage Casserole I love this one because I can make it the night before if I'm having company over and I just have to pop it in the oven in the morning.
Is this the place to put that I could never get behind macaroni and cheese as a main dish?
Or is that shun-worthy?
Even with stuff (chicken, broccoli, etc) in it or just on its own?
I agree on its own it's either an indulgent (yummm) main dish or a side dish. But as a "something I'd actually serve other people" main dish I put stuff in it.
Y'know, in theory, I haven't entertained in over a year.
I grew up in Amish country PA too and we did not eat casseroles growing up either. I am not sure what there is to not understand though. I am now in Iowa and they are a lot more common here (and I have a friend from Minnesota who keeps trying to get me to try her spam hot dish ). I don't love them because I feel like a lot of times everything kind of just ends up like mush but I can see why they are popular.

I think of casseroles as a one dish wonder sort of thing, not a side dish. The whole point of a casserole is quick and easy. If I wanted to make a bunch of side dishes and such, I wouldn't make a casserole.

get outta here with your helpful shit, goontz
ROFL shut up! There were only a few responses when I started looking up the recipes.

Nope, still couldn't do it for me. I mean, I'll eat lobster mac n' cheese or truffle-infused with bacon mac n' cheese, but I'll still want a steak to go with it.
I wasn't into casseroles until wannabe got me hooked on tater tot casserole.
I love that dish and it is decently healthy (aside from the tots and cream of crap) bc I use lean ground meat, fresh or frozen veggies like an entire bag of mixed veggies and chopped broccoli, greek yogurt instead of sour cream, and light cheese. I know I bastardize it but it's still really good.
The great Nest debate if casseroles = lasagna. Bitches were fighting hard!
For the record, yes, yes they are.
To me, lasagna is an Italian dish. It's layered, organized and takes a lot of time to make. Casseroles are a bunch of shit haphazardly thrown together, usually with cream of crap or cream cheese.
This is not true. My chicken broccoli casserole is layered, not all mixed together. And you have to make many of the ingredients separately before combining.

You're sounding way too reasonable for this debate to take-off. Here, I'll help:
No, you're totally wrong! It doesn't have to be haphazard - it can be good! Lasagnas meet the definition! Look it up.

ALL OF THE THINGS ARE CASSEROLES.
Oh, it's ON PANTS!!
You never see chicken broccoli shit casserole on a restaurant menu, do you?? DO YOU??
It's a casserole, not a DISH! Lasagna, is on plenty of menus, it's a famous, delicious, Italian dish, that has been around forever!
(I'm sure your casserole taste lovely and I would eat it)
Ok, now I have to work for a bit, I'll be back. To be continued.
All I have to add is that I'm being besieged by casseroles. In fact, they've been rolling in, on and off, since December. My fridge has 5 different types of casseroles in it right now. 5. And someone is bringing 3 more today.
The southern protocol for any life event is to make a casserole and take it to person experiencing said life event. Birth? Casserole. Death? Lots of casseroles of varying main/side dish status. Illness? Casseroles, brought with varying frequency.
