I feel the need to insert this here: those pizza casseroles all over Pinterest look fucking disgusting.
What about the meatball sub one that has the italian bread on the bottom with cream cheese and mayo on top then the meatballs/sauce/cheese?
Everyone keeps saying how awesome it is but I'm iffy about trying it, I'm not sure if the cream cheese will melt into it or just be a lump of hot cream cheese on top of bread.
Shepards pie is good, I also consider chicken pot pie a casserole type thing and enchilada bake. All these are regulars in my house. I will be trying the pierogi one next week, yum! If you dont think of a mac and cheese one as a meal how about adding some ham? Serve with carrot sticks and voila! Dinner!

Wait what? I'm stuck on the idea that central PA doesn't do casseroles. H is from the Amish area, and the certainly do. Heck there are Amish recipes that are casseroles.
And many, if nit most, Amish dishes are far from elaborate.
My parents never made casseroles. DH makes chicken, rice and cream of crap. Other than that, I don't know of any others. I need to look up this Tator Tot one everyone is talking aboutm

LCH: I like casseroles, usually if someone else makes them. I don't turn up my nose and go "ew, you made a casserole, never will I eat that".
Irish; the area I was in wasn't huge on it, but they did do them. My family was not big on them what so ever and therefore we did not do them. My grandparents were PA Dutch and would turn their noses up at the very idea that a casserole as a main dish sit on their table. I'm sure we did casseroles (like potato, green bean, etc) as side dishes but I was not taught to make main dish ones, my Mom was never taught, and we just did not do them.
Just because the area I was in didn't seem to be big on them and my family didn't do them, does not mean all of Amish country didn't do them.
I'm kind of over defending why I'm not big on them; the bottom line is, my family didn't do them, I never learned, the ones I have tried making have failed horribly, and because of that, I don't understand the hype.
Oh I totally get you saying that your family didn't do them. That nakes sense. my family really didnt either, other than stratas for breakfast. I was more responding to the Idea that the whole area doesn't. That's crazy talk.
Well, I just want to be clear that it's not that I don't like casseroles, I just never make them.
I do enjoy broccoli rice casserole and I actually made that a couple of months ago so I'm a big fat liar. I also like breakfast casseroles, I just never really make them.
I feel like I'm committing to a lot of food and they are usually really starchy.

Oh no, they did them. The small circle I grew up in didn't really. I'm sure 95% of the rest of the county did, lol.
Sometimes I feel like I grew up in a tiny camp outside the rest of society, ha.
I didn't grow up with casseroles. I really can't recall ever seeing one until college, and then it looked like a gloppy mixture of cream o'crap soup and some form of meat. So yeah, I judged.
However, I have made a few nowadays, but only in kosher or vegetarian form.

these examples don't make a good case for casseroles.
This is not true. My chicken broccoli casserole is layered, not all mixed together. And you have to make many of the ingredients separately before combining.
ALL OF THE THINGS ARE CASSEROLES.
Oh, it's ON PANTS!!
You never see chicken broccoli shit casserole on a restaurant menu, do you?? DO YOU??
It's a casserole, not a DISH! Lasagna is on plenty of menus, it's a famous, delicious, Italian dish, that has been around forever!
(I'm sure your casserole taste lovely and I would eat it)
Ok, now I have to work for a bit, I'll be back. To be continued.
You have me there. I have never seen "Chicken Broccoli Shit Casserole" on a menu. It's because they're not pretty. What's funny is you could add most of the ingredients to pasta and now it's an entree! Different presentation.
I love casserole and if I ever meet you, I'm going to force feed you chicken broccoli casserole until you a) vomit or b) admit it's delicious. It's my new life goal!

I have never, ever given this much thought to casseroles in my lifetime. For the record, I don't make them but would probably eat it if you served it to me.
For those who were hoping for some tasty casserole recipes, here you go. And for those who think casseroles are for lazy people, please read these. Some of them are quite a bit of work, but well worth it.
I get not liking certain kinds of casseroles, because some of them are fucking gross. But patently disliking ALL casseroles is weird. it's like saying, "I don't like sandwiches." lol.
Some people don't like sandwiches! It is strange but true!
How about I amend to "I don't like casseroles involving cream of _____"?
You take casseroles way too seriously. And I say that as a Minnesotan.

As a transplant, I'm wondering how you are letting her get away with not calling it "hot dish".
I "get" casserole now that I live in a place where it is cold as fuck all winter. I started making a super kickass "taco pie" (yes, my dear new MN friend gave me the recipe) and it is freaking amazing white trash goodness. I LOVE it in the winter. Seriously though - I have never met anyone who makes their hot dish with cream of mushroom soup and green beans out here - they take that shit seriously. Gourmet.

The great Nest debate if casseroles = lasagna. Bitches were fighting hard!
For the record, yes, yes they are.
To me, lasagna is an Italian dish. It's layered, organized and takes a lot of time to make. Casseroles are a bunch of shit haphazardly thrown together, usually with cream of crap or cream cheese.
I didn't grow up with casseroles. I really can't recall ever seeing one until college, and then it looked like a gloppy mixture of cream o'crap soup and some form of meat. So yeah, I judged.
I honestly thought that everyone ate casseroles. There are so many mixtures. This is making me emotional.
I never tried a casserole until college either, although this is probably less surprising, given my background.

I only bust out the Minnesotan when I'm talking to church ladies.
I've been here 3 years and have basically caught myself acquiring an accent. I don't understand it - my husband is a native and doesn't even talk like this. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!
