I wear a size 2 at Ann Taylor. At H&M I can barely fit in a 4 pants! I needed a 6! Is this normal at this store? Oh but I can fit fine in their size small t-shirts and tanks with no problem.
Yeah, its fucked up. I was there yesterday and I was trying a few pairs of light blue jeans (one turquoise, one mint, slightly different styles, but barely different in any way). I fit in the 6 in one pair (I wear a 2 everywhere else), and the other pair which was a 6 fit like a normal zero...like I couldn't even get them past my ass. They fit 2 sizes smaller than the other pair I tried on. THEY WERE THE SAME SIZE!! So annoying. Even more annoying was that they didn't have an 8 in that pair, which was the color I preferred.
I went in with all 2s and 4s. After half on hour of confusion I didn't have the patience to play this game of "what size am I for this item" and try all those again in another size. I came out with a pair of mint pants in size 6. Oh it was too funny trying to get in a size 2 dress! I could only get my head and half my arm through! I couldn't get that thing past one shoulder! If there ever a day I felt big, today was the day.
yeah I had to get size 10 tops and size 8 bottoms in their bikinis...so that was interesting
and the dresses I got there were size small...so odd!
Yup, I've had that problem too!! I've definitely learned to take at least 2 or more sizes of things into the dressing room when I'm there! I've gotten pretty good at examining an item and knowing when the sizing is off too.

That is why I hate H&M and can't shop there. I hate bringing in like 10 different sizes of the same item! A couple months ago a size 10 looked like a little kid could fit into it.
English sizing is 2 sizes above American sizing, so in the States I might be a 10 and in the UK I'm usually a 14.
Its not just the UK sizing thing either. I know what size I am in UK sizing. But when I can easily buy an almost identical pair of pants in 2 different sizes (one in size 4, another in size 8), its more about inconsistency in sizing all around. If it was just the UK sizing, I would still be buying the same size in those 2 pants.
Same with tops/dresses. I have XS though L in tops, and range from 2 to 10 in the numbered sizes, as others have mentioned.
I was near tears last time because I brought it so many cute things and then couldn't really get any of them on. eff their sizing. I do not have the patience to try on multiple sizes of multiple items multiple times.
Meh, to me its valuable time! I just know what to look for now. For me, its worth the cute clothes and cheap price, since I don't have a huge budget for shopping. H&M, despite the annoying sizing, is still one of my favorite places to shop. I just try to go when its not too crowded, and usually have an idea of what I'm going there to try on. I make sure to examine the item I want to try on and try to get a sense of whether it will run big or small, and then bring in a few sizes accordingly. If stuff doesn't fit, it doesn't fit, and that's it. Its not the end of the world, and while I may be disappointed, I am well aware that the sizing sucks, and there is nothing I can do about it.
