I had a friend who was trying to join when I lived in Albany, NY. It was like she was rushing a sorority! She wanted to join to have a group of close women friends and get involved in some charity work. The amount of money she had to spend just to be considered "eligible" for membership was insane. If I wanted to give to charity, I would just donate that money directly, not spend it on a party in hopes that some of the attendees would give more than I would myself.

I'm a member of the local Jr League in my area and have liked it. I think PPs are right in that it really varies by area. Some Leagues I believe you need a sponser to get into, and some Leagues you just have to fill out paperwork.
The first year can be kind of overwhelming - there's a lot going on, but if you have time it's also fun.
One thing I would say is be sure and check what areas the League typically has meetings/events in. In my area, most of the meetings are in the core downtown, which hasn't worked out all that well for me. If I would have realized that going in, I might have found a different organization to be a member of.

I am and love it! I am doing 2 different volunteer activities in the next two weeks through JL. And I have met some fun women through it as well who I hang out with.
It varies by area. Most of the northern ones I've seen are pretty cool. I would never join the one down here though. It's old school southern and VERY old money and sexists. No thanks.

Yeah, $80 is way cheap. I believe in my area provisional dues are also around $300.
And gmail, I agree with you that it's probably best to find something else if you already feel like you don't have time. When I was a provisional I was doing a Jr League activity probably twice a week, every week. Plus more when my provisional project was up and running. That may not be the experience in every League, but I'm guessing it's pretty close.
