I would. I spent more than I should have on my NB stash. I'd probably get some yellow-edge GMD prefolds and covers and use disposables until those fit. The prefolds come in handy for lots of things besides diapering.
I would. We loved the Pampers swaddlers with the color changing line in those first weeks. We were changing hundreds of diapers and doing loads of laundry. Adding cloth to the mix was too intimidating for me. (Of course there are some moms who take cloth to the hospital!)
That's exactly what we did. Also, honestly, we were so overwhelmed in the beginning that I did not want to deal with additional laundry. Luckily I know myself well enough to know I'd feel that way, so I didn't bother buying newborn CDs. I don't feel guilty at all for going that route.
We didn't cloth diaper until DD was 3 weeks old, and she was a big(ish) baby--8 1/2 lbs at birth and never really lost much. There are a lot of diaper changes at first and it's not worth it to have a ton of little diapers, I think. We did have prefolds and covers but they gave DD terrible diaper rash so they didn't work for us anyway.
If you're super committed to CD, go for prefolds and covers. If you're okay with disposables, just do that. We're planning to CD DD2 as well, and I'm comfortable with starting her earlier than DD1, but we'll probably still do disposables for the first week or two.

we started CDs at about a week - but we used a 12-week rental. I wouldn't be opposed to sposies for the beginning, but I used that time to test out different CDs to decide what we wanted to use and buy up our OS diapers.
If I had known about them earlier, I would have bought these: www.swaddlebees.com/Products/All-in-One-Diapers/Newborn_Simplex because they fit up to 16 lbs (which she just hit at 6 months). I would definitely have had to add extra absorbency, but DD is an insanely heavy wetter.
Baby's not here yet, but we're not getting any newborn diapers for our stash. Both DH and I were larger sized babies, and this one is growing right on schedule so far, so chances are she would not be in NB diapers for very long. We are getting NB disposables and a combination of prefolds, covers, and OS pockets that we will have her start wearing as soon as they fit.
I'm okay with disposables for a short period of time. I'm also concerned b/c our washer/dryer are upstairs and if I end up with a c/s that could make doing multiple loads of laundry difficult in the beginning.
I think the more I think about it, using disposables until kid fits into size 1s makes the most sense all around.
Also, your baby may not fit OS CDs as soon as they fit size 1 sposies - mostly they may leak out the legs until they chunk up a bit (like hit 10-12 lbs).
I'd just get NB PFs and covers. It's cheap, and you can re-use the PFs as doublers in OS pockets when s/he is older.
C was only in his NB stash for about a month because he was so huge. I was a little salty that we got so little use of it, but now we stuff his BG 4.0s with the NB PFs so I feel a little better about it, LOL.
We did get a bunch of free disposables from the hospital (about a week's worth) and I used those up before we started CDing.
I didn't start cloth until DD was like 6 months old, but I decided to go all in and get a newborn prefold stash when I was pregnant with DS. DD was a week late and only 6lb, 15 oz and since I was having DS at 39 weeks (scheduled c/s) I assumed I'd get a fair amount of use out of them. I remember the moment the announced that DS was 8lbs, 6oz and though damn it, I just wasted a bunch of money lol.
Honestly, while his circumcision was healing and dealing with meconium poop.. And then I had bleeding nipples so that prolonged the gross poop etc, the prefolds just weren't worth it. Now, since I already have them, I'll use them for this new baby, but I wouldn't advise anyone pregnant with their first to jump in with a stash unless you're super committed or can get them super cheap or something. I'm buying a single box of newborn sized diapers to get us through the first few weeks and I have the stash lol.
We used disposables until the kids legs chunked up and fit into non-NB size CDs. (So, probably between 9-12 w for each kid. ETA: They were both born at 8 lbs. 5 oz.)
Our reasoning the first time around was that I was so overwhelmed w/all the new stuff to learn that I decided to take it slow with the CDs.
The second time around, it was that we didn't already have a NB stash and my options for reselling locally while we lived outside the US were limited. I knew that working FT and handling two under 2, I'd likely never get around to selling my stash, so it wouldn't be cost effective for us. Pretty specific circumstances, but waiting to CD was what worked for us and in the same scenario, I'd do it again.

i don't think it is a bad plan. That being said. No one in either DH or I's family was a small baby (his brother was 9 lbs, mine was 8 and DH and I were both just under 8lbs). DS was 5lbs and 14 oz and fit in newborn diapers for 3 months, only moved out because he needed more absorbancy. So you never know!
DS was 9 lbs and fit into the one size diapers at a week. We also used a lot of PFs in the beginning bc they are easier to control size-wise if that makes sense. But for that first week, yeah, we used disposables. We had a bunch the hospital gave us so we just worked our way through those.
We did a load of diapers about once a day the beginning - H did it at night when he got home and we let them dry overnight and then he would bring them up from the basement in the AM (csection so I limited my stairs) for the first two weeks).
You don't have to decide now. You won't want to use cloth in the first few days because of meconium anyway, and you can get them pretty quickly once you order them if you decide you do want to use them. This is what we did. We had a surprise small baby, under 6 lbs at 40 weeks despite nobody on either side of the family ever having such a small baby (all babies were 7.5-9 lbs). We used disposables until we had our feet back under us but figured she would be small enough for newborn cloth diapers to be worthwhile so we ordered 24 Kissaluv 0s when she was about 10 days old, received them within a week from Kelly's Closet.

I wish I had gone with this. DD outgrew all of her covers except 1 by 2-3 weeks, and outgrew the absorbancy of NB prefolds by 4 weeks. Disposables + OS pockets would have worked just fine for us.
I spent about $100 on newborn diapers the first time. He was in them 7 weeks. That didn't save any money... but now #2 is free and then I sell them for about $80. So it does save money in the long run, and it was good to get into the habit right off the bat.
Also, now I hate the stench of Pampers. A week on the road reminds me I love my cloth diapers.
We got only BG4.0s and my LO didn't fit into them until 3mo, even though she was 8.5lbs at birth. Skinny legs. I wish my stash had more variety, but I got a good deal on the BG4.0s so.....(but then ended up spending more on little packages of disposables, thinking she'd be done with them any day now).
Luckily we used them awhile with dd, because they would have been a waste with DS. He was a ten pounder. He fit into his newborn stash for about a week. He fit into OS diapers before he was two weeks old.
We used sposies until 6 weeks and then went to BG 3.0s and he's been wearing the same 24 diapers since then. He's 2 years 8 months. Hopefully we will be pt sometime soon. But all efforts have failed so far.
We used disposables until the stump fell off-it was so much easier to deal with. We still use PFs as our primary diapers. It's easiest for us.
Here's a picture of his first day in CDs at 16 days old. It took forever for his stump to come off! I also sent DH home with a pack of diapers from the hospital each time he went to go let the dog out-this got us through those first 2+ weeks just fine. We ended up "stealing" about 8 almost full packs of diapers. We just told each new nurse that came into the room that we were low on diapers and wipes
Even though people knew we were going to CD, we got a ton of NB disposables for our shower, so we primarily used those. We did have a handful of NB CDs (not quite enough for a full day) that we used a couple of times a week to get used to them.
We had no trouble switching from disposables to cloth - we definitely prefer cloth, even after using disposables for the first several weeks.

And ditto this. Especially since I had built a large OS stash. It's not as though I was suddenly going to say, "Screw that!" Yes, disposables are easy. But they're also wasteful, expensive, and not great for babies. I didn't forget those things just because I used them for a few weeks.
I think it's great that so many used CDs from the start, but I was definitely in the camp of those who wanted to regain their bearings before adding yet another chore to the equation in those earliest days.
We started with a cheap newborn stash (prefolds and covers) but because DD was so small (under 6lbs) we knew she would be in the nb size for a loooong time so we ended up doing sposies for two weeks (too small for nb CDs) and then upgrading our stash to include AIOs. She wore them for about 4 months so it was worth it for us.
I don't think I'd do nb size for you if you're pretty certain your LO will be bigger when born.

But omg they're soooooooooo cute lol. I'll have to pip my nb stash.
I know; so tiny! Believe me, I totally debated buying some, right up until the end. H talked me out of it. I guess our case was a little special because we were 90% sure we'd be dealing with extra newborn care due to E's clubfoot. It wasn't much more than normal, but that little extra bit of energy probably usurped any I would have had for dealing with CDs at that stage, LOL.

We didn't start cloth with DS1 until he was 6 weeks but we decided to invest in newborn cloth this time around, so DS2 has been in cloth since we got home from the hospital. We used prefolds we already had so just had to buy covers. He is almost 4 months and a big boy but still in the newborn size, so we feel that we are getting our money's worth. And they are SO cute. So tiny...I love them!
