Glad you didn't have to get one! I thought I'd have to at my first appt with my doctor, and he gave me the choice, since I'd never had an abnormal one. I obviously said no. But yeah--I'd probably think that would be awkward too.
First - why would you get a pap when you are pregnant? Your cervix is "abnormal" during pregnancy. Mine is due but dr told me I had to wait til 3 months post baby before I could get it.
Secondly - why the complete nakedness and gown for a pap??? Seriously... Any time I've had mine I just got naked from waist down (behind a curtain) with a cloth covering me from waist down. Even for internal scans during miscarriage it was the same. You can at least maintain some level of modesty that way.
And I'm glad you didn't have to have the smear in the end...

I had a pap at my first pregnancy appointment because the doctor just wanted to make absolutely sure everything was okay down there. And I've always been naked with a gown to cover up because my doctor also gives me a breast exam.

Yup, this. I think it's just standard operating procedure.
I think so too. When I went in for my prenatal education appt, the NP said I'd get a pap at my first u/s appt and when I told her I'd had one less than 3 months prior at my annual (which was at the end of Sept, got positive pg test mid November, and had 1st OB appt mid December) she was like "Oh, you're good then."
And ditto Velar Fricative on the paper gown...I can't remember not having to wear one for an annual b/c there's always a breast exam included.
