We are in the process of collecting estimates from various contractors to have the entire exterior of our house redone. Our neighbor is doing the same and said that every single estimate she received was exactly the same dollar amount, down to the penny. We are now experiencing the same thing.
Based upon my experience with past contractors, I would have guessed that we'd get a range of estimates. Has anyone else experienced something like this?
No. That's really weird. I'd assume they're all in some deal together, but to what end, I can't imagine. I get that materials would be the same if they all buy from the same supplier, but surely labor costs can't be that fixed in the area.
tarheels, your reaction was exactly the same as mine.
ETA: I just exchanged emails with someone who worked with contractors for several decades and he said there is a high probability of collusion because various trade organizations encourage members to share labor and material costs with one another.

That is so weird...I'd just flat out ask a couple of them. Why are my quotes from you and your competitors exactly the same? Let them know that it is disheartening and how they would then decide if you aren't familiar with each of their work? Put it back on them and let us know what they say.
I would be afraid there might be collusion. Are the houses similar or in a development where all houses are pretty much the same? Is the estimate detailed or is it a lump sum? Ask for a detailed estimate. I would not share information on one contractor's bid with another. If the estimates are detailed and all bids between you and your neighbors are the same, contact the licensing agency. Hopefully there is a good explanation.

Down to the penny is odd.
I've had bids on commercial projects be very close before though. Especially if they are all getting materials from the same place and use the same labor & profit markups.
I can't edit from my phone but wanted to clarify that contacting the licensing agency would be to report the fact that you received identical bids. They will/should know what to do from there.
