We took the fireplace insert out and got rid of it. The only thing they are allowed to burn in the house is candles so we did not keep the (ugly) insert.
We redid our fireplace in stages. First we painted out the upper portion white and added some more molding to make it less ultra 80s modern, rather than the contemporary to transitional style we wanted. Then we refaced the tile portion, replacing the 8" porcelain tiles with slate 2" mosaic tiles. Around the same time as the refacing of the tile, we also went with a warmer tan/beige, rather than the buttery cream for the wall color. Here are my before and afters of just the fireplace.
My bff did a white wash to his fireplace and is so happy with the results. He has given me full permission to use any and all house pictures he sends me (because he and I are always sending home improvement pics back and forth! More him sending pics to me though since he's actually good at what he does lol) so here are his before/afters:
Before:
After:
And I guess it depends on the lighting? Because he sent me another pic (can't find it right now" and the white wash didn't look quite as gray/white as it does in this pic. He loves it though, and I think it looks good.

My husband is whitewashing our fireplace as we speak! We thought it would be best to get it done before our new hardwoods get installed in the living room next week.
We painted ours a cream color, removed the custom mirror, ripped out the plaster and ran our tv wires in the wall, mounted our tv and added crown molding.
