I feel like this is such a typical MIL complaint on here, but its about my mom, not his. So I was giving Audrey her roasted seaweed with wasabi snack and my mom wanted to try it. I gave her a little piece and warned her that this batch was heavy on the wasabi so a bit spicy. Well she broke off an even smaller piece, touched it to her tongue and immediately spit it out going "Ugh! How can you feed that to her?" Then turns to Audrey and says "What is your mommy feeding you?? Poor baby!"
I am so annoyed because I don't want her turning my child off of any food. I don't like ham or fish, but I feed it to Audrey because I don't want to pass down my stupid food issues. My mom hates basically any food from the entire continent of Asia and probably Africa too. I am so worried she's going to pull this stuff when A is older. When I talk to her about it she says she is just "joking" and thinks I'm taking her too seriously. Arg!

My mom is kind of the same way, except she knows to keep her damn mouth shut. It also helps that we only see her once or twice a year. But she is such a picky eater, and it's hard to get her to try new stuff. My kids are, thankfully, not picky at all. H used to eat anything we put in front of her, and while she's still a great eater, she is developing ... uh ... opinions about everything.
That would frustrate me so much. I'm the same way as you: a picky eater that's trying to not pass that down to my child. Funnily, I don't do ham or fish, but I've given tuna to Zoe and she loves it, so I don't want to limit what she'll eat by what I'm unwilling to eat. Luckily, my mom is not picky like me, but if she was pulling that kind of crap, I'd be pissed.
I may try this. I can eat less fishy fish like tuna, I just don't really enjoy it. I usually can't handle salmon, its just soo fishy to me. I keep trying though because I want to eat it.
Yeah, it's funny. I was raised on pretty bland food. Lots of baked chicken, rice casseroles, and vegetables boiled until they're mush and once I came to New York I fell in love with the varied international cuisine that's available here. I was worried that an "Eww gross how can you eat that?" is worse than non-exposure, but I guess everyone is different and all I can do is try to lead by example.
