I'm stuck again. I'm about to go granite shopping and think I'm leaning toward something like this
My cabinets are going to be shaker style, probably painted in a med gray, similar to the other pic
What do I do for flooring? Attempt to match the adjoining 80s oak? I'm thinking tile is our best option, but I have no idea about a color. Do I go dark, with a charcoal slate? Light? If so, any suggestions? I don't want to compete with the granite, but I don't want too plain either. The other kicker is that it's a log cabin, so all of the kitchen walls are wood.
Hm, I know this isn't what you asked, but I might rethink your cabinet color. I think you may be running the risk of having a disjointed home, where there's a super trendy kitchen (gray cabinets, gray granite) in a rustic home. I'm not saying you have to have burgundy and forest green with a bear motif, but gray cabinets are so ridiculously trendy and I just can't see them in a log cabin. I LOVE the second pic ssm posted with the slate floor and wood cabinets - modern, yet still rustic without being hokey.
Because we're only redoing some of the cabinets, painted is what it's going to be. I definitely get what you're saying, but I've been pretty pleased with how gray has gone with the logs so far. Here is the master bed and bath, both of which are almost finished. Maybe they'll give you an idea of what I'm looking for... Kind of vintage rustic modern?
I would lean toward the wood mainly to avoid too much gray. I think a dark gray would look great with the counters but if the cabs are gray too it may be too much. If you go light tile on the floor, then you have the age old issue of trying to care for light grout or having very prominent dark grout lines, which may compete with the granite and logs.
