Oh yeah, if you can't make the interview, who is to say you'll show up for work?
A friend of ours says the same thing about trying to find people. You get a ton of resumes, try and do interviews and hire, but all the while candidates are so/so. They've had people they've hired, the person has accepted, their start date comes and they're nowhere to be found.
SSM. That's just it. And the nuts part is it's a very specific skillset in a very specific field. It's not like it's a position any random can just apply for. They full well know what they're getting into before I even call to schedule an interview.
My firm is hiring for a couple positions right now and that is the complaint I hear - lots of resumes, but few-to-none that are actually well qualified. And that's before you even get to the scheduling an interview stage.

I apply for jobs even if I don't feel completely qualified. I've seen crazier things happen lol.
However, I'm at least PARTIALLY qualified for the job. Like maybe I'm missing one thing. I have had one interview in the last year and it's really freaking discouraging. I know the job market for my field here is sparse, so all I can do is hope I get an interview one day.
-signed, Just applied for one more yesterday and will do another tonight when I can polish my cover letter
Blergh. Just sounds like a pain and a big headache.
But I'm really encouraged reading this thread that employers ARE hiring.
Ha! Dairy farms hire left and right no matter the economy. It takes a lot of helpers and no one wants to work that hard (somedays, rightfully so) or it's such a specific skill and not a job anyone can just do.
I thought we had an in because we paid quite a bit more than average and threw in some free perks other farms don't have. Apparently not.

OMG, that BLOWS. In an ideal world, you could hire someone who is advertising that they DO what you need done, instead of YOU being the person running the ad and searching for your new employee. Because this way, they see you as their boss; whereas if THEY run the ad, they see themselves as their own boss, and take much more initiative and responsibility for their livelihood. From time to time, I hire people to help me out as well, and it always sucks. Good luck.

At this point I'd take partially qualified. You like cows even a little? HA.
In my teacher world I apply all the time for stuff I just barely qualify for..but you know...I at least show up to the interview to prove myself.

The one guy we wanted to interview we found because he posted an ad looking for work right under us, so H called him. He can't manage to call back.
I see what you mean exactly. The one thing we love about e. students is that nine times out of 10 they advertised to get themselves here, worked hard to get through the paperwork, so after all that BS they're more than willing to work.

Do you think milk's too cheap for the work that goes into it? A gallon here is $3, but I know it can be more elsewhere. I know there have been reports that when the factory workers in China find out that their _____ is sold here for a pittance, they get really riled up/depressed/feel that life's unfair.

Not really. It's like we all work hard to put a safe quality product on the table for everyone. We prefer it stays affordable so we stay in business. The pricing issues and financial concerns of the dairy industry are more wrapped up in ridiculous government regulations, the out of whack feed prices compared to what we get paid for milk, and just the constant ups and downs of the game that is agriculture pricing. How much milk is in the store is just a little part of the picture.
Cows I am okay with. Horses? I'm a little scared. But I'm not sure I can do the commute.
Housing is cheap here, if that sways you..lol. I don't do horses either. I work with big animals every day but I have trust issues with horses. There's not a horse to be found on this farm.

Housing is cheap here too! Just.. no one wants to live in Kansas apparently lol. (I mean, I do because it doesn't snow but a few months of the year and then it gets REALLY not and I can see how that is unappealing.)
