They all seemed to have mediocre-to-poor reviews on Amazon and contained stuff we didn't know if we'd need, so we skipped it. My recommendations would be to register for a NoseFrida, PiyoPiyo nail scissors, a comb and brush (I went cutesy with the Skip Hop bunny set, but it does take up some space), and a good thermometer.
But yeah, people love buying the set, so maybe the Red Cross one? I remember that one looking OK.
I agree with catbus -- I would skip the set and just register for the items you really need. A thermometer, nose frida, and Infant Tylenol are the only hygiene items we really used. Plus a cool mist humidifier and diaper cream, lotion, and baby wash if you are counting those things. I have always found my regular manicure scissors to work better than baby nail clippers.
I agree not to bother with the set. We use regular nail clippers, a NoseFrida, and an Exergen temporal thermometer. C doesn't really need a comb or brush at this point.
The hospital sent us home with a bunch of that stuff too--bulb syringe, tiny nail clippers, nail file, cheapie digital thermometer we use for rectal temps, etc.
I had the Red Cross one and we never used anything out of it. It was a huge waste of money. Baby nail clippers are useless (though I did not try the PiyoPiyo ones, maybe I will with DD2) and honestly babies really don't need hairbrushes etc. I have never used a baby specific hairbrush on DD.
I agree with catbus that registering for piecemeal items instead of a kit is the way to go. My essentials were the NoseFrida, a rectal thermometer, and the Exergen temporal thermometer. That's about it. We used the little toothbrush you put on your fingertip once or twice but you can just as easily massage baby's gums with a washcloth over your finger and be done with it.
We use ours a lot- I think it's the Red Cross one, and we use the aspirator, thermometer, nail clippers, and the brush and the comb (she had a lot if hair from day 1).
We got the Safety First one, and the only thing we use out of it are the nail clippers, and the medicine dispenser (like a super tiny bottle, makes giving Tylenol super easy). I hated the thermometer it came with and now have the exergen temporal one. The hospital gave us a bulb syringe (just got the nosefrida though and love it) and a hair comb (that we never use).
We got the Dr. Mom one and have used a lot of the items in it. I never used the nail clippers... we've always just filed and it hasn't been a problem. I know the filing doesn't work for everyone though!
