The short story is that my labor was 25 hours long and I was an hour and a half away from a c section, however the epi made me relax and my body fully progressed in 4.5 hours once I finally got it.
Last year at 9:30 pm on April 8 DH and I were getting ready for bed. I mean, I was literally lifting my leg up to get into bed when I heard and felt a small pop. Immediately after there was a small trickle. I thought it was my water, but there definitely wasn't a gush. I went to the bathroom and wiggles around and sure enough I was leaking, so we headed off to the hospital.
Once I was admitted to the hospital the nurses noticed that he had a "low base line." She came in the middle of the night and smelled of smoke. I had some sort of ultrasound stress test and everything turned out okay, but he just had a lower than usual heart rate.
I labored on my own all night. Finally at 6 am on the 9th they checked me. I made no progress. I was given cytotek and then later pitocin to help things along.
At 4pm I still did not make much progress. I was less than 2 cm dilated, so they upped the pitocin, but I did not meet the 4 cm rule for the epi.
Finally at 6 pm, almost 21 hours after my water broke, I was still less than 2 hours my OB gave the okay to give me the epi just to see. I was immediately relaxed and was able to sleep for the first time since the night before.
Two hours since the epi, I was about 5 cm. At 9:30 pm, 24 hours after my water broke, my OB made the call to do a c section at midnight if I hadn't given birth by then. The nurse checked me and I was at 8. Then at 10 she checked again and I was fully ready. The OB was at the hospital by 10:30 and I started pushing shortly after that. After about 3 minutes of pushing Jake was born at 10:41 pm.

A 4cm epi rule? Wtf? I had the same issue you did. I just would not progress at all until I got an epi. I was at 1cm for 15 fucking hours. I finally gave in and had them give me the epi and I finally starting progressing a got to 10cm in 3 hours.
I pushed for three minutes.....not three hours. I read all of these longer push times here and thought that it was odd. Now I see I am the odd one. Before the OB arrived, the nurse told me to do some practic pushes. I did. She then said to stop because the baby was going to arrive before the doc.
