Does the city do large item pickup? The neighbor may need to call to arrange it.
My city has a municipal dump. You can use it for $17 a truckload. But, we don't have a truck. So, if we had to throw out a couch, we'd have to put it out by the cans and wait for the city to get it.
But really, that's ridiculous. When no one came to get the couch, they didn't take the hint that no one was getting rid of it for them? Instead they added more stuff?

Everyone around here does that regularly. Supposedly, our trash company is on strike, but they're still picking up deliveries. Down the street, a family threw out a great big red couch (I kinda liked it), but it snowed the day after they set it out, so it sat there for a few weeks until the snow melted. Once it was clear though, the trash guys took it. We had an entire garage full of leftover crap from the former house owners put on our curbside. I didn't think we were allowed to do it, but our realtor felt bad about the extra crap being left, so he took it all out to the curb himself. He was at least 70, too. We're klassy though out here.
