I saw a lady on fb bragging about how safe her rf son was....... He was 5!!!! He hadn't reached the 40lb limit and his legs were Indian style cramped! Sorry lady but I would think that seat is not meant for him rfing and he is probably in more danger by rf at 5!!!
If he's still within the height/weight limits of his seat, then he is still safer RFing. Heck, adults would be safer RFing, we just wouldn't agree to sit that way. But the physics is obvious and conclusive.

All of this. I turn my kids at 2 but I don't judge others for going longer. It is safer.

This. I'll keep A RFing until as close to 4 as I can get just for safety/developmental reasons. I don't judge those who turn earlier or keep going longer, but based on my own research, this is what I'd be most happy with. We'll see though

It varies wildly from seat to seat, and whether a kid has long legs or a long torso. Really the seat is outgrown when their head is level with the top of the shell. Britaxes say 32", I think the Dionos are 40-something".

It is actually an inch from the top of the seat.
DS would still be RFing if he weren't a giant. He outgrew the MyRide at 38.5", he just turned 2. RFing is by far safer. @butterbrot can attest that Europe or is it the Swedes RF FOREVER.

I didn't realize this! I've never seen kids that big rf. I was just shocked.

Wait, RF limit for Britax is 32? I need to look into that because I have a Britax and Adeline is that tall. So, I actually may need to be flipping her.

Go by the head, not the height. If she's longer in than legs than the torso, she'll be good longer. As long as she has an inch above her head in the shell, she's good.

My Britax is 40 inches. Check your manual. But really, Britax follows the 1" rule so her actual height doesn't matter.
I will keep Ari rfing as long as I can. If I bought a Radian or Foonf it would probably be near 4 but I bought a Britax and he will probably grow out of it around 2.
I just ordered a Radian RXT today because I want Madison to rear face as long as possible and it has one of the highest height requirements. Heck, I still have her in her infant seat instead of rushing her into a convertible.

I just looked and it's 49". So we have a long ways to go until we even worry about it.
We switched Edie right at 1, but she HAAATED being backwards. Adeline doesn't mind at all. So we'll keep her that way until she starts to hate it.

It's Sweden where they RF forever. It's a different story here in Germany. I am the lone RF freakshow around these parts. Well me and a friend of mine whose son turns two next month. In fact, when our friends were here from the states last week, the rental car company gave them a booster for their four year old. And I don't mean the chair kind, with a back on it. It was just a thing for under her butt. Luckily we were able to borrow a different seat for her from neighbors.
Anyway, I posted a link once from a site where I said that's where I bought H's rear-facing seat. Well, I was full of shit, because here is the site I really did order it from. I had to order from Sweden because back in 2009,it was impossible to buy a RF seat outside of the normal baby carrier things.
Long story short, and to agree with the others here, it is always safer to rear face. I don't know why you would say it is unsafe for a five year old who is still within the height/weight requirements for his seat, puppylove64.Props to your FB friend for keeping her son that way for so long. It is such a pain in the ass, to be honest. I hated not being able to understand H when she talked or to see what her problem was when she cried. We wised up with Butterbaby and got a mirror, so that makes things a littler easier.
