MIL and I went to get Babysaurus her first real pair of walking shoes yesterday. Previously we went to Stride Rite, but she freaked out the whole time and we couldn't find any that fit right before she went nuclear, so we didn't buy any. Our Stride Rite is small-ish, runs out of sizes a lot, is always packed, and has the heat cranked way too high. So, this time we went to Nordstrom.
Wow! Our Nordstrom kid's shoe department is awesome! They have a big custom fish tank with little chairs set up around it so kids can sit and watch, the staff is crazy helpful, you can book an appointment rather than walk in if you like, and get this: if it's your baby's first shoes or first walking shoes, they take a photo of your baby wearing them and give your baby a "Nordy," which is a plush shoe horn. The photo is just a crappy little digital picture in a paper frame, but I was so surprised and pleased about it. Also, Babysaurus loves her Nordy. Who knew a plush shoe horn would be such a hit?
They had great selection and tons of sizes--more in the Stride Rite brand than Stride Rite had! Plus, Baby Tom's! I think we will be regulars now. The only problem is that the prices are a bit steep. If you are having a hard time getting shoes for your LO, I recommend trying Nordstrom.
Damn you, NYC! Why don't we have a fucking Nordstrom!!?
WHAT?!? This is shocking to me!
And I'm glad you had such a good experience there, that makes all the difference when you have a baby, really. They do have a great selection too. What shoes did you end up getting?

we bought Luke some adidas there because they were soft soles with rubber toes- he kept sliding when pulling up on our hardwood. They told me about the picture and everything for the first pair of walking shoes. they are pricey but I think comparable to stride rite. I love the shoes we got there and will go back!
