He was 2nd runner up for the job he applied for in Austin, but they asked if he'd take a slightly lower position in Las Vegas or Austin. He'd have to do a final interview with the director before it would be official. It would be 10k extra, 10% bonus, relocation package. Both states have no income tax. Cost of living is about 3k less both places. They offered to help me get a job with them until I was settled and found something else, too. I only make 40k, so we'd be short 30k if I choose to look on my own for a job (I'm not sure what they'd pay me if I worked for them).
So far, here are my pros and cons: 1) LV has really cheap flights home for me, so seeing family is easier. 2) LV is close to LA so I could see my uncle more often 3) Austin is a lot like Denver and is about the same distance away from my parents. 4) Austin seems more dog friendly. We have two big dogs (see sig). 5) LV is their bigger office, so theoretically, more options for promotion for DH. 6) Austin office is new, so it could grow quickly. 7) Austin seems to have actual seasons but not too cold like Denver.
I've lived in LV, never again. I hated it there. I love Austin and would move there if H got a job there. I've never lived in Denver but I do love Colorado.
I would stay in Denver. An additional $10k without a huge difference in COL just isn't worth moving IMO, especially when it would mean you quitting a job and having to job search or take something temporarily that may not pay as well.
Austin is my second choice. Las Vegas sucks. Have you ever been away from the strip? The non-touristy areas suck pretty bad. It's a good place to visit for a weekend, but I'd hate to live there.
DO NOT MOVE TO VEGAS. I travel there frequently for work and I am in the courthouse all the time. You don't want to live there. Trust me. If you have to pick one I would always pick Austin. Soo much more to do in and around the city.
i would stay in denver. but if i had to choose between austin and vegas, i would choose austin.
oh and cost of living in austin is not 3k less than here. more like 30k. houses are cheaper, everything is closer together, etc.
Is it still, though? I researched living in Austin for work and I couldn't find anything to rent that was cheaper than here, really. And the awesome neighborhoods are still pretty pricey to buy in. Every time I go there I'm actually kind of surprised at the cost of everything compared to Denver. Plus, the traffic. Oh my sweet baby jesus the traffic.

There are nice neighborhoods in vegas where you can have a big house and yard relatively cheap. So to me, I would consider Vegas to be dog friendly. If your dogs are breeds that can handle the heat. Just throwing that in there FWIW.

well i'm not counting areas where houses are 500k+ in texas. comparatively, you know that same square footage and location style here would be more expensive.
my house is actually smaller than most of my friends that live in austin burbs and they all paid less than 150k for their houses in similar neighborhoods. what you can find for 150k here is either in commerce city or 80 years old and falling apart, ya know?
if you're talking trendy location vs. trendy location for rent, i'm sure it's comparable. but when i was there in march i noticed groceries were cheaper, gas was about the same but your commute is shorter so you're spending less, etc.

but yes, holy jesus the traffic.
Oh you are absolutely right about the suburbs. I didn't really think about it because I'm a fucking hipster who has to live in the coolest spots in town. DAMMIT.
If you don't stay in Denver then I would definitely pick Austin.
Definitely this.
But I hate the heat and fry like a piece of bacon on a griddle in the sun so can't imagine living someplace where I would have to hide out much of the year.
Austin is very hipster country to me. College town. State Capital, Generally Liberal, Food Trucks, Awesome Whole Foods, Good party/bar strip, decent restaurants...etc.
It really depends on where you live in Austin. Traffic can be a byotch though since you only have like 3 major highways. I lived in Bastrop which is 45 mins out of Austin. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like country life.

We'd want to live in the downtown areas. We live in a studio in a high rise right now, and we like that style of living. No yard work for us! H's job would be 3 miles from the Strip in LV, right in downtown in Austin.
I live in central Austin. There are tons and tons of condos going up right now, so you should be able to find something close to his work that isn't too outrageous.
Then you'll definitely want to price the high-rise studios in downtown Austin. That's not my bag, but I think they run in the range of $500k. (Then again, they just keep building them, so maybe supply will outreach demand and it won't be so bad.)
Within the corridor of, like, 45th street to the north, Lamar to the west, I-35 to the east, and Oltorf to the south, you'll find the bus routes to be pretty handy. You might check out South Congress or just east of downtown for loft options.

My friend lives in a high rise on 4th street right DT and it's beautiful. One bedroom runs her 2k a month. She has an amazing view and a dog. Austin is very dog friendly. If you're living DT you'll also have easy access to Town Lake which has an awesome trail. And the best Whole Foods ever in the whole entire world is there. It's magical.
